Note from a retired professor that worked at Utah Valley [1]

The death of Mr. Kirk (a Danish word meaning Church) has the nation riveted, white knuckled by those fearing a coming onslaught of violence, and those feeling pushed, or even released into the maw of propaganda justifying their clawing need to lash out against those that they have been told deserve their wrath, often articulated by Kirk himself.
One of my college roommates, an anthropologist that taught for 22 years at UVU, retired and now living abroad, placed his thoughts on Facebook. I was so moved by them I feel the need to share them with the DK community.
I do denounce the murder. No one should have their life shortened. War is one thing, this is not war. Yet.
My friend commented that Kirk is in the process of sanctification. His hate and flaws whitewashed, his speaking skills and ability to organize praised. His martyrdom proceeding apace. Half staff, lying in state, people marginalized for speaking the truth of his evil. Plaques and monuments to be raised. Schools and buildings to be named. Those that point out his own words and the irony of his own fate against the background of his statements on gun violence are denounced as heartless agitators. Shrines will be built, pilgrimages made, says the professor.
I will link to his comment, my response is the lengthy one. We were roommates, and he had a great influence on me. Before, I was neutral, or rather, unaware and did not yet have a political voice. I will note that his comments and my response do refer to the LDS church, really an unavoidable factor given the location of UVU, in the heart of very conservative Republican LDS Utah. I am LDS and have received significant blowback here on DK because of it. Understandable. I will make no response to any comment regarding that church. Feel free to speak your mind.
