Within hours of the death of Charlie Kirk I heard either the name Horst Wessel by itself or in reference to the song Horst Wessel Lied, a song penned by Wessel later adopted and expanded into a second German/Nazi national anthem. (This link will take you to YouTube where you can listen to the song if you wish. The song is banned, except for educational purposes in some countries.)

Why did the name Horst Wessel pop up? Because many on the right were thought to be attempting to eulogize via hagiography, Charlie Kirk into a martyr, for the far-right and White Christian Nationalism. And with a big assist from main-stream media white washing Kirk’s history of rude, crude and violent rhetoric, they may succeed.

So whether or not you knew the name of Horst Wessel, odds are, you’ve heard the song he wrote. The place you most likely heard the song, was in some movie about the Nazi era in Germany(1930-1945).
