Trump: “I can do whatever I want.”
Today, on Fox News, Donald Trump . . . who holds the office of President of the United States, head of the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government, with an oath to ensure that he will take care that the laws of the United States “be faithfully executed” . . . said, in regard to the District of Columbia,
"We have actually more power in DC. I can change the mayor if I want. I can do whatever I want."
Now, Mr. Trump has said similar things at other times, in regard to other questions. What I want to suggest here, is that this is in fact the way that he views his office. He really thinks — and he expects others to think — that He. Can. Do. Whatever. He. Wants.
In his first term, I told people that he thinks of himself not as president, but as potentate. Now, I think that he thinks of himself as LORD Trump.
For those of us old enough, the image is of Star Trek, 1966, “Whom Gods Destroy,” where Kirk deals with the delusional Captain Garth.
Garth’s self image is, to me, “trumpian” — — “I am LORD Garth.”
The Star Trek episode ends with a hopeful and uplifting conclusion.
