GOP invokes Nuclear Option for Senate Confirmations [1]

There was some pretty big news yesterday, so it’s not surprising this got lost in the shuffle. In fact, I’m pretty convinced that’s why the GOP pushed through the confirmation rules change at that time. They had actually been working on it for a while but kept saying, “oh no, can’t do that, the Dems will abuse it if/when they take back power.”

Well so much for that…

Last night the GOP removed the 1-vote hold option for “non-cabinet level” confirmations. Now they can work in batches to confirm Trump’s appointees and they expect to push through 48 of them this coming week.

The process for confirming appointees has been changed several times in the last dozen years, with the Dems removing the 60-vote threshold for confirmations, then the GOP expanded that three times since then first for SCOTUS nominees and then reduced time for debate for nominees before finally taking this step which allows them to simply ram through whoever Trump tells them to.

Maybe I should be happy that this didn’t include federal judge nominees, but I won’t be surprised if that comes up next.
