Supreme Court Sentences Former President to 27 Years for Plotting a Coup [1]

This is how a functioning democracy works: The Guardian reports that Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to more than 27 year of jail for trying to annihilate the country’s democracy after losing the 2022 elections.

But they didn’t get away with it at all,” said the US president who has spent recent months trying to pressure Brazil’s supreme court and government into halting Bolsonaro’s trial with a campaign of tariffs and sanctions. Antunes Rocha and Cristiano Zanin ruled on Thursday that Bolsonaro – a former paratrooper who was elected president in 2018 – was guilty of seeking to forcibly cling to power after losing the 2022 election, meaning four of the five judges involved in the trial had found Brazil’s former leader guilty. Announcing Bolsonaro’s sentence for crimes including coup d’etat and violently attempting to abolish Brazil’s democracy on Thursday night, the supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes said: “[He tried to] annihilate the essential pillars of the democratic rule-of-law state ... the greatest consequence [of which] ... would have been the return of dictatorship to Brazil.”
The other guy in the title picture did not take the news very well. Maybe his ears were buzzing?

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was days away from taking office for his third term as the Brazilian president when soldiers from a special operations unit allegedly discussed the best way to kill him – possibly through poisoning or administering drugs that would trigger “organ failure”. Investigators would later conclude that the supposed plan to assassinate the president-elect, his vice-president and a supreme court justice was one of many strands of a wider plot designed to keep the far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro in power.
Apparently holding former leaders accountable for their actions while in power is possible. Who knew?
