Just What the HELL Is Wrong with MSNBC? [1]

Last night Chris Hayes and Jen Psaki each devoted their full time to the Kirk killing. OK, I can kind of understand that. It was fresh news, not that there wasn’t a lot of other fresh news, and it was political violence, and they did sort of try to act like journalists. But tonight I turned on All In (Hayes wasn’t there), and Jen Psaki, and Lawrence O’Donnell. Each time I had to turn it off after a few minutes because ALL they would talk about was Kirk Kirk Kirk and the hunt for the person the authorities now think shot him.

I couldn’t take much of it. I did see one brief clip where some politician (I forget who) said Kirk was all about non-violence — and no one so much as commented on just how ludicrous, how insane that is. Kirk said gays should be shot, celebrated when Paul Pelosi got his head bashed in, and said that people getting shot was the price we have to pay to keep our sacred Second Amendment. And nobody called this guy out when he said Kirk was all about non-violence.

OK, I couldn’t bring myself to watch the whole shows; I just flipped back to them a few times while watching old West Wing episodes. (If that was supposed to calm me down, it didn’t, because one was Isaac and Ishmael, where Toby and Josh and CJ told a group of high schoolers that the strength of the United States was in our commitment to pluralism.) So it’s possible I may have missed the part where they talked about the GOP and the MAGA and the RW media are all turning Charlie Kirk into a martyr for the cause and how the Democrats will pay for stirring up violence. (I could — we all could — play hours of clips of GOP from Trump on down calling for political violence, but what do I know?)

Meantime, there’s famine in Gaza, while Israel just bombed one of our allies, Qatar, just in case Hamas was thinking of settling the war. Russia is pushing hard at NATO trying to see how far it can go before TACO pushes back. Bolsonaro just got sentenced to 27 years for trying to steal the Brazilian election. They are still processing that school shooting near Denver — doesn’t that rate some coverage? Oh, I almost forgot — there was more Epstein material released today by Bloomberg.

So why, WHY, is MSNBC, including Lawrence O’Donnell, for crying out loud, spending all its time on what is, yes, an important story, but not the ONLY story, especially when all they are doing is sitting around waiting for the incompetent FBI director to show up and take personal charge of what is a state crime to begin with. Why are they doing MAGA’s work for them? And why aren’t they providing a counter to the hero-worship of a private citizen who specialized in hate?

“The Last Word” is still on as I finish this. They are still hashing over what the police are doing while they show the same clip of the possible shooter on the roof over and over. Did the shooting of Melissa Hortman, the former speaker of the Minnesota House, and her husband, and another House member, get anywhere near this kind of coverage? I can’t recall.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? Are they that afraid of the rabid right?
