America’s Reichstag Moment? [1]

On February 27, 1933, the Reichstag, the German parliament building, was destroyed by arson. Without evidence, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party blamed Communists who he accused of a plot against "national renewal." The resulting Reichstag Fire Decree abolished constitutional protections leading to the Nazi dictatorship, the European Holocaust, and World War II.
I deplore political violence as a threat to community and democracy. I fear the murder of Charles Kirk, a founder of the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA, in Utah, has the potential to become America’s Reichstag moment.
As of this morning, no suspect has been caught by police and no name has been released, but Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans without evidence already claim to know who to blame for Kirk’s murder, the “Radical Left.”
Donald Trump — “Radical left political violence has hurt too many innocent people and taken too many lives. … My administration will find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity and to other political violence, including the organizations that fund it and support it, as well as those who go after our judges, law enforcement officials and everyone else who brings order to our country.”
Laura Loomer — "The best way President Trump can reinforce Charlie’s legacy is by cracking down on the Left with the full force of the government. Every single Left wing group that funds violent protests needs to be shut down and prosecuted. No mercy. Jail every single Leftist who makes a threat of political violence. We can’t allow for these people to live among us in society. If you threaten people over their political views, you should be jailed for 25 years or more. " –
Stephen Miller — “All of us must now dedicate ourselves to defeating the evil that stole Charlie from this world.”
I hope saner voices will shift the dialogue away from accusations into discussion on meaningful gun control reform, but I don’t expect this to happen. Charles Kirk once actually said “I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights.”
