Wednesday GNR Trade: Goodness Gracious! [1]

No Bad News for Them that’s Gud Gnuz for us today, only the bestest of the Goodest Gnuz around. That means I had to put some of my regular sources aside for today, and go exploring. I have been mining Bluesky all this year, and now I am going to mine Substack and more e-mail sources more seriously.
Let me know of other good sources, like bilboteach’s announcement about our fundraising, or Denise Oliver Velez’s cartoons in the Abbreviated Pundit Roundups, when they don’t focus too much on You-Know-Who. I feel ready for more useful list-making, for my own benefit and yours.
MCUBerniefan was scheduled to be a poll worker yesterday, and asked for a sub to write today’s GNR. I am delighted to be here instead. I will have my usual GNR categories tomorrow, but today I’m going to approach the Gud Gnuz differently.
A little Bluesky news.
Health
I can’t post from Substack directly here, but I can sometimes repost to Bluesky and then embed that here.
My mother had scarlet fever as a teenager. The damage could have been much worse than it was.

x “scientists developed a mRNA vaccine – based on similar technology used for some COVID-19 vaccines – to block the fertilization process. The result: a 99.7% drop in the rate of transmission of the malaria-causing parasite recorded in preclinical studies.”

Happiness
A Buddhist version, known as the Four Divide Abodes. Consider how each of these four points would apply to the nastiest MAGAtroids around. First wish them well yourself. Then imagine them wishing everyone well. They wouldn’t BE MAGAtroids at that point, of course.
x may all beings be free from suffering and the root of suffering
may all beings know happiness and the root of happiness
may all beings live in sympathetic joy, rejoicing in the happiness of others
may all beings live in equanimity, free from passion, aggression and delusion — meri (@himawari.fun) September 7, 2025 at 12:07 PM
For example:
I know where you can get those shoes. It’s all in the mind, you know.
The Environment
Illinois is making ‘rewilding’ an official conservation strategy
A new law in Illinois formalizes efforts to reintroduce native keystone species like bison and beavers in the state, which advocates say will help other species recover.
Try that again. Advocates have masses of data on animals restoring whole ecologies and providing food and shelter for multitudes. Like sea otters eating sea urchins and restoring kelp forests from overgrazing, or wolves holding down deer populations and allowing plants to recover from overgrazing and stabilize river banks. Bison eat grasses and fertilize them. Beaver ponds provide habitat for fishes, amphibians, and more.
I have no idea why I didn’t know about this. My wife told me yesterday about visiting there before we met.
The Geysers
The Geysers is the world's largest geothermal field, containing a complex of 18 geothermal power plants, drawing steam from more than 350 wells, located in the Mayacamas Mountains approximately 72 miles (116 km) north of San Francisco, California. Geysers produced about 20% of California's renewable energy in 2019.[4] Calpine, the largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources in the US, generates power at the site. For about 12,000 years, Native Americans built steam baths and thermal pools at The Geysers and used the steam and hot water for healing purposes, as well as spiritual and ceremonial practices, and cooking.[5] The thermal pools were used as a medicinal treatment for rheumatism and arthritis.[6] The heated mud was used to soothe skin rashes and other aches and pains, using the fumaroles as a natural energy source.[7]
Oh, OK. Add that to Health and Happiness, then.

No, this star cluster is not 12 gigaLY away. We are seeing it from 12 gigayears ago. It’s actual distance is much greater, due to the expansion of the universe since then. Maybe a much as 45 gigaLY in what is called comoving distance. We can only see stars in the past, not where we calculate they would be about now.
