Iran-Contra (or as some of us called it, Iranamok) is the first political scandal that I remember. It was confusing at first, coming out in bits and pieces: Officials in the Reagan administration secretly sold arms to Iran in order to free hostages in Lebanon and illegally fund the Contra insurgents in Nicaragua. This week saw a surprising update regarding two of the principals in the scheme.
But first, a word from our sponsor!

Oliver North, a National Security council member, essentially fell on his sword and took responsibility for the whole mess, and gained a lot of fans on the right because of his ability to spout bullshit in a solemn, important-sounding voice. He was convicted of lying to congress, including ordering his secretary Fawn Hall to destroy records, but his conviction was reversed on appeal. Hall mostly faded into obscurity after that.
After a failed Senate run, North spent years as a talk-show host on Radio American and (what else?) Fox “News.” In 2018, he became president of the NRA, but resigned less than a year later during a power struggle within the agency. In 2024, his wife Betsy Stuart passed away after 56 years of marriage.
This week, it was revealed that Oliver North and Fawn Hall married on August 27th. Appropriately for people who did a lot of secret dealings, the ceremony was done in secret, and not attended by the North children.
As the first anniversary gift is traditionally paper, we can assume Fawn’s gift to Ollie will be something shredded.

I nominate Portlaw's comment in the death penalty diary by Things come Undone. Hers is the attitude everyone should have. Life-and-death power of institutions is constantly abused.

Essmeier adds some perspective on the Republican reaction to the shooting of Charlie Kirk.
