I heard a podcast today and it helped me understand this site so much better. It had a short clip of Noam Chomsky:
Interviewer: How can you know that I'm self censoring Chomsky: How can you know that you're self-censoring? I'm sure you believe everything you're saying. But what I'm saying is if you believe something different, you wouldn't be sitting where you're sitting.
That really helped me understand why there is so much news about certain topics (Trump, Ukraine/Russia) and so little news about some other topics (Israel/Gaza) on this website.
The podcast is Current Affairs, they have a magazine as well. The episode was an interview with Taylor Lorenz who wrote a piece in Wired recently about online content creators who are receiving money from and coordinating with Democratic party leadership.
Here are some really interesting sections-from the podcast.
Yeah, to go off of that, I don't think that the purpose of this cohort of creators is to strengthen the Democratic Party. Their role is to protect the Democratic establishment. They're best understood as essentially the unofficial marketing and public relations arm of the Democratic Party, as far as I am concerned.” Because how can you have a stronger Democratic Party if you completely ignore Gaza in your coverage and you pretend that this is an issue that people don't actually care about? How can you strengthen the Democratic Party when we see so much organic, fiery grassroots energy behind Zoran and you don't even cover him? Their role is to do bland interviews with Hakeem Jefferies and Chuck Schumer that never gets to the heart of why the Democratic Party is the only thing more unpopular than Donald Trump right now. … Instead of spending millions funding lame pro-democrat centrists online, who ultimately have no cultural impact and only exist to feed a study stream of Chum, Tablo, Maka, MSNBC, Moms, these organizations should put that money toward backing labor reporters, climate investigators, housing organizers, tech accountability advocates, all of whom command enormous trust. Here are major stories about Palestine that did not have a blog post on this site:
Global Sumud flotilla with several activists including Greta Thunberg, Susan Sarandon and Liam Cunningham is sailing 40+ ships to break the siege*.
The flotilla was bombed yesterday (almost certainly by Israel which has attacked prior humanitarian ships
Israel continues to kill 100-150 Palestinians with bombs and bullets each day, and many more through starvation and medicide
Trump has continued Biden’s policy of gifting Israel billions in weapons each month.
Israel has completely destroyed several high-rise residential towers in Gaza City this week.
* The Good News Roundup had a line about the flotilla. Sumud means steadfast perseverance and is a Palestinian political strategy.
