I'm attending an Anti-Austerity Conference this Weekend. Join Me? [1]

This weekend I’m attending The Anti-Austerity Conference. Although it is taking place in Bristol, UK, you can attend virtually, as I am.

The basic principle of the conference is based on a quote by John Maynard Keynes: Anything we can do, we can afford.

And yet, in the UK and the US we constantly hear we can’t do things because we supposedly can’t afford them. (Unless of course it’s tax cuts for the wealthy, but even the tax cuts are “paid for” by cuts in social spending.)

Right now there is a “left wing” Labor party in charge in the UK. Yet they are calling for austerity because of the false premise that the UK’s deficit implicates “fiscal rules” on spending. This leads to a pattern:

1. Governments, including left-leaning governments impose austerity because of “fiscal discipline.”

2. Peoples lives are made worse.

3. Falsely blaming. e.g., immigrants, right wing governments are elected.

See my story: Deficit hawkery leads to austerity: Do NOT oppose the Budget Bill based on the deficit

Stephanie Kelton, author of The Deficit Myth, is a featured speaker on Friday. That book should be required reading for all Democrats.

Consider joining or reading The Deficit Myth, or seeing the related Movie, Finding the Money.
