Charlie Kirk Assassination, Utah's open carry law, and Musk's insane "Left is the party of murder" [1]

Right wing Turning Point USA provocateur Charlie Kirk was assassinated at Utah Valley University today. Democratic leaders across the nation immediately denounced the heinous shooting using the strongest language possible. Nevertheless, Elon Musk felt obliged to characterize the violence as the fault of the Left even though the suspect originally thought to be the shooter was subsequently released. Without knowing the identity of the shooter or the motivation, Musk declared that “the Left is the party of murder.” Small problem with that bit of insane rhetoric—the Left and Democrats have consistently tried to pass reasonable gun control legislation, while the right wing and Republicans continue to espouse virtually unrestricted ownership and displays of guns. Utah has an open carry law, so apparently the shooter in this despicable event was able to join the crowd listening to Kirk comment on questions related to gun violence.

All Republicans and MAGA have to offer in cases like this are “thoughts and prayers,” calls for INCREASING gun ownership, and irresponsibly asserting without proof or logic that the Left foments and excuses murder of conservatives. Instead of working to reduce gun violence, they prefer an armed citizenry reminiscent of the old Wild West. How well did that work out? What was the first action Wyatt Earp took when he became sheriff of a town? He disarmed the citizenry. Weapons were returned once gun owners left town. We are a gun mad country in love with our weapons. We know from the experience of Australia, among other countries, that restricting gun ownership significantly reduces gun violence. Chief Justice Warren Burger, a Nixon appointee, wrote in the District of Columbia vs. Heller case that asserted the virtual inviolability of the 2nd Amendment that the unfettered individual right to own a gun is a “fraud on the American public.” He advocated the sale, purchase, and use of guns should be regulated just as automobiles and boats are regulated. Republicans instead seem comfortable having just about everyone packing heat, even teachers in elementary schools. We know from the experience of every other industrialized country (UK, Canada, Australia, etc.) how to significantly diminish wanton gun violence in America. We know what to do but we don’t have the will or the guts to do what is required.
