Nepal is a landlocked Asian country that lies between India and Tibet along the Himalayan mountain chain. It has been politically unstable and eaten up with corruption for some time now.
That has come to an abrupt and violent end in just two days in what is being called a Gen Z Revolution because it is led by young people.
x Images have surfaced online showing a government building in Nepal completely engulfed in flames as a result of protests in the country.

Protesters stormed government office buildings, chased down government officials and in a startling demonstration of the corruption in the system, protesters seized cash stored in government offices and threw it out windows. The wife of a former prime minister died when their home was burned.
It literally rained dirty money in Nepal.
The government initially responded with force and 19 protesters were killed. As the protests spread the prime minister resigned.
Some protesters stripped the country’s finance minister, threw him in a river and chased him while beating on him..

Nepal has had a turbulent history with governments ever since the monarchy’s was deposed in 2008.
Transparency International ranks Nepal 107th out of 180 countries in its Corruption Perceptions Index, highlighting persistent governance challenges. Young activists said frustration with inequality and a lack of job opportunities also played a part. Over 20% of Nepal's 30 million people live in poverty, according to the World Bank, while unemployment among those aged 15–24 stood at more than 22% in 2022-23. The richest 10% earn more than three times the income of the poorest 40%, underscoring stark economic divides.
The social media ban was the trigger but economic inequality was a chief underlying cause.
It was widely criticized as a means to stifle dissent, with many sharing anti-government messages online, but the Nepalese government said it was to tackle hate speech and misinformation. "That was the trigger for the protests to spread quickly," said John Sifton, Asia advocacy director for Human Rights Watch. "But really this is about deep-seated frustration, especially among the younger generation, [over] deep-seated corruption and nepotism and poor governance." When the ban came into effect, many from Nepal's younger generation were already outraged after a viral online movement called out "nepo kids" — children of politicians posting videos online of their fancy cars and lavish lifestyles. The posts were shared using hashtags such as #NepoKids, #NepoBabies and #PoliticiansNepoBabyNepal, highlighting the disconnect between how the children of politicians live, while alleging the use of taxpayer money, and the lives of most Nepalese. The spark that seemed to set this off was a government attempt to ban social media platforms.
x Young people are using the social media platforms that were just recently unbanned by the Nepalese government to circulate videos of them burning a former Prime Minister's wife alive and stripping the Finance Minister naked, then throwing him into a river. Oh my God. Oh my God.

Whether this revolution has any lessons for the rest of the world where the rich keep getting richer remains to be seen. And while an uprising is certainly possible in Russia, unfortunately I don’t see that happening any time soon.
