In U.S. Senate bid, Rep. James Talarico promises to take on GOP billionaires and bridge political divides Texas Rep. James Talarico launched his bid for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, promising in an interview to bring honesty and compassion back to politics, while pursuing a fairer distribution of wealth and power in the country. “It’s been 10 years of Trumpian politics — politics as blood sport,” said Talarico, a progressive from Austin and an aspiring minister, in an interview. “This campaign can show people what a different kind of politics would look like — one that actually fights for people regardless of their party or their race or their gender or their religion — and takes on this broken political system and the very powerful people who benefit from this system being broken.” A former public school teacher and nonprofit director, Talarico, 36, has served in the Texas House since 2018, representing North Austin and parts of Pflugerville and Round Rock. He was first elected to a seat that narrowly went for President Donald Trump in 2016, before switching to a bluer district in 2021 when state Republicans drew him out of his original seat. www.texastribune.org/...

Regional HUD administrator launches campaign to represent Iowa’s 2nd District At just 28 years old, Joe Mitchell’s resume already includes running a real estate business, holding public office, starting a nonprofit and serving in the federal government. Now, he’s gunning to keep Iowa's 2nd Congressional District under GOP control after Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson announced plans to run for the U.S. Senate. “I’m running for Congress because too many Iowans have been left behind by a broken political system that works for insiders and lobbyists — not for us,” Mitchell said in a statement. “For too long, politicians in Washington have wasted our tax dollars and cut backroom deals while working families pay the price.” www.iowapublicradio.org/...

Republican Ohio Supreme Court justice drops out of race to unseat Democratic colleague next year One of the Ohio Supreme Court’s six Republican justices said he’s abandoned his plan to switch races and run against one of his colleagues on the bench. Justice Pat Fischer, who was re-elected in 2022, said in May he would run next year against Justice Jennifer Brunner, the only statewide elected Democrat in Ohio. In an interview, Fischer said he will follow through on what he said this weekend to a panel that interviewed candidates to recommend one for the Ohio Republican Party's endorsement. The screening committee recommended Second Court of Appeals Judge Ron Lewis. "During the presentation to the Ohio Republican Party's judicial screening committee, I was asked if not endorsed would I run. And I said no," Fischer said. "And I keep my word, and so I'm not running." www.statenews.org/...

Democrats Narrow Gap in House After Victory in Virginia Special Election A Northern Virginia Democrat coasted to victory in a special election on Tuesday for the U.S. House seat left vacant after the death of former Representative Gerald E. Connolly, an expected result that will slightly narrow the party’s deficit in the chamber. James Walkinshaw, a former chief of staff to Mr. Connolly who won his former boss’s endorsement shortly before he died in May, defeated Stewart Whitson, a Republican lobbyist for a conservative think tank, according to The Associated Press. Mr. Walkinshaw, 42, who is an elected member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is the first Democrat to win a House special election since President Trump took office in January. He framed the election as “our first chance to send a Democrat to Congress since Trump took office again.” www.nytimes.com/...
