Trump says that wife-beating ("a little fight with the wife") shouldn't count as a crime [1]

On Monday, during remarks at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, Trump said that a man beating his wife wasn't a crime. Or at least it shouldn't be added to crime statistics. The subject came up as he was falsely claiming that he had eliminated crime in DC. He said the only reason the stats showed there was still criminality in Washington was due to domestic violence being inappropriately listed as a criminal offense. In his words :

"It's called the safe-zone city. There's no crime, they said crime is down 87%. I said no, no, no, it's more than 87%. [It's] virtually nothing. And much lesser things, things that take place in the home, they call crime. You know, they'll do anything they can to find something. If a man has a little fight with the wife, they say 'this was a crime, see,' so now I can't claim 100%."
Of course Trump doesn't think domestic violence, or even violence against women in general, should be considered a crime. Why? Because he has a long history of accused, self-admitted, and adjudged sexual violence against women. And yet he doesn’t think he is a criminal.
Beyond the many stories of his sexual barbarism, he has been found liable for sexual assault (in the vernacular 'rape'). He has been accused of marital rape by an ex-wife. And he is on tape confessing to pussy-grabbing . And even when he isn't violent, he is a sexual pig with pedophilic tendencies.
Unsurprisingly, Trump is also lying when he says the only crime in DC is domestic violence. The New York Times reports (the paywall should be down):
The president claimed without evidence that there was now zero crime in DC While crime is, in fact, declining in Washington — and Washington's mayor has credited the federal law enforcement surge with contributing to the decline — there are still robberies, assaults and thefts occurring on a daily basis. On Sunday alone, there was a homicide, six motor vehicle thefts, two assaults with a deadly weapon, four robberies and more than 30 thefts, according to police statistics.
The NYT adds:
The president has often sought to create an alternative reality of crime statistics to support the law enforcement actions he wishes to take. On Monday he said people had categorized Washington as "the worst, the most violent city" in America, despite statistics showing a major crime decline in the nation's capital even before his crackdown.
The fact that Trump was in the Museum of the Bible when he shared his dismal philosophy was entirely on message. The Museum was the brainchild of David Green , who funded its creation. Green is a fundamentalist Christian who founded the Christian corporation Hobby Lobby and is a major supporter of evangelical organizations.
Talk to a conservative Christian, and they will tell you that Christianity is the sole source of morality and a unique force for good. Yet ask them who they voted for, and they will likely tell you it was Trump. That is a circle that will never be squared.
In 2015, when they first glommed onto the orange-tinted sinner, expedient evangelicals waved off his immortality by declaring Trump was a newly minted, baby Christian , a step away from his personal epiphany on a 21st-century road to Damascus .
When Trump's continued depravity rendered that claim unsupportable, the fundamentalists changed their tune. They instead anointed him the second coming of Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great, a non-Jew who saved the Jews from perdition. In their retelling of the story, Trump is a non-Christian sent by God to save Christianity in America.
These hypocrites will remain untroubled by Trump's dismissal of wife-beating as a crime. At this point, the true believers would excuse him if he were found guilty of sex-trafficking minors. However, the 2024 first-time Trump voters, who are already expressing buyer's remorse, will have one more reason to question their choice.
