Oregon coast GOP state rep switches parties [1]

Last week Oregon state representative Cyrus Javadi announced he is leaving the GOP, and will run for re-election as a Democrat.
The D's already hold super majorities in the state due to the D voting population of the Willamette Valley vastly outnumbering the R voting eastern and southern voters. The coast has long been "purple", and this district in particular was long the domain of "independent" Democratic Senator Betsy Johnson, who retired to unsuccessfully run for Governor.
She was, at times, a thorn in the side of the state D establishment, as she cared more for the needs of her constituents than following the "party line". It sounds like Mr Javadi is taking up the mantle of independent D in Oregon.
Oregon has a tradition of progressive Republicans, but the current batch are nothing but a "no" voting block, which was apparently the last straw for Mr Javadi:
"By the end of the long session in June, my patience had worn thin. Every priority for Oregon’s North Coast, nearly every single one, ran into opposition from my own party. Protecting Medicaid benefits for the nearly 60% of children in Tillamook and Clatsop counties? Opposed. Keeping rural hospitals afloat? Opposed. Preserving students’ access to books that reflect who they are? Opposed. Protecting the First Amendment rights of people different from ourselves? Opposed.
Not because the policies were flawed. But because helping me deliver for my district didn’t fit the Republican Party’s agenda."

Nice to see a Republican see the light, and have the courage to act. Mr Javadi wrote that after he announced the switch, he arrived to find that his dental practice was vandalized.
