Growing Older, More Complications. A Colorado State Open Thread, September 8, 2025 [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-09-08

The Colorado Open Thread, as I just recently noticed, has now been published for over ten years. In all that time I’ve had ups and downs, a number of guest writers (thanks to all of you), a variety of topics and I’ve tried to cover many different areas of the state. I’ve also tried to cover natural and cultural history, current events, politics, sports, some of the tragedies like some of the mass shootings in our state, national events that affect our state and sometimes state issues that affect the national scene.

I’m always open for suggestions from Kosacks for topics either for new Open Threads for upcoming weeks or for upcoming posts, especially if there are people who would like to write one of these on your own. As a reminder, I will be out of the country on October 20th and 27th and it will be tough for me to write a column on Colorado issues for those two Mondays. I will post something of a general nature for you to comment between yourselves on those two days, but it is unlikely I’ll have anything topical for Colorado on those days, so please volunteer to take over those diaries or come and write something that day to make it yours for Colorado Kosacks. I’ll try and read it, but I may/may not read it until many hours or even a few days later.

I was planning on having a nice calm fall to finally watch the elk rut for the first time in a few years but things have become complicated. Instead of being around Estes Park, I’m going to be taking a few trips. The first one is to Kansas for a week to look after an ill relative. As we age, our bodies run across more and more illnesses that don’t allow for time and space to deal with the illness at our leisure. This trip just came up suddenly and it involved having to get house sitting for my dogs and cats on short-notice but fortunately a relatively new friend had mentioned she needed a dog fix (foolish mortal) so she’s now going to get a week of dog fix with my 90 pound Aussie doodle Shaggie (who needs pills for his seizures 3x/day) and my 20 pound cocker spaniel Ginger, plus cat fixes with my 17 pound tortie cat Anni and 5 pound Siamese cat Bella. I hope everything goes well with them — she’s never met the animals before.

September and October are two of the prettiest months in Estes Park for the year, with the leaves turning color and the temperatures cooling, but now I am leaving for a week in September and two+ weeks in October, this time to Thailand. I was planning on not going back to Thailand, but the new house and music bus are both being blessed on an auspicious (Buddhist calendar blessing day of October 22nd) day and my girlfriend has a party planned. Not just any party planned. A party for 300-400 people, including relatives, dignitaries of the area. friends, and people who may be hiring the music bus for concert gigs. I decided I really need to be there for this dedication ceremony, so I will be going in October for this.

Music bus. The bus has a stage which can swing down and hold singers and dancers. It has huge speakers that can swing out and a generator that can power the whole show and lights. It can drive up to the field or other venue and have the whole performance without needing to set up a stage.

Front of farmhouse in Thailand

Back of farmhouse in Thailand with my girlfriend’s cousin. In the other direction is a fish pond and two rice paddies.

Somewhere within the break between September and October trips, I want to go down to SE Colorado to see the migration (or Mategration, as 9News was calling it) of the tarantulas as the males go looking for females down in SE Colorado. I can’t take too long, but if I take a 3 day trip or so, maybe I can get lucky and find a few. I have a couple of friends who want to go see them as well. Any Kosacks want to go see them around Lamar around the 5-8th of October or so?

Anyway, there’s pitifully little Colorado news and events in tonight’s Open Thread. Maybe that’s just to prove the topic can be whatever anyone wants it to be about. There have been a number of front page stories about Trump threatening Colorado with doom if Colorado doesn’t take away a couple of gender neutral bathrooms that students asked for in high schools in the Denver metro area and of course Trump is taking away the Space Force from Colorado Springs because Colorado has mail-in ballots (which Trump himself uses), but you can read about those in the Colorado COmmunity group. Meanwhile, comment here about the issues that are of interest to you. The floor is yours...
