Welcome back friends to the Monday Good News Roundup, that time of the week when your intrepid GNR Newsroom (Myself, Killer300, Bhu, and the fine folks at the GNR discord) bring you all the good news to start your week off right.
Don’t have much of a preamble this week so lets just jump right in to the good stuff, starting with some music. Raindrops keep falling on my head by BJ Thomas
Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan has been arrested at Heathrow Airport on suspicion of inciting violence in relation to his posts on X. He was arrested by five officers after arriving on a flight from the US, and said in an online Substack article that officials then became concerned for his health after taking his blood pressure, and took him to hospital.
Good to see shitty transphobes being taken to task. All I can say is get ready for some messed up stuff about JK Rowling to get revealed one day.
Warner Bros. Discovery is suing a prominent artificial intelligence image generator for copyright infringement, escalating a high-stakes battle involving the use of movies and TV shows owned by major studios to teach AI systems. The lawsuit accuses Midjourney, which has millions of registered users, of building its business around the mass theft of content. The company “brazenly dispenses Warner Bros. Discovery’s intellectual property” by letting subscribers produce images and videos of iconic copyrighted characters, alleges the complaint, filed on Thursday in California federal court.
Anthropic will pay $1.5 billion to settle a lawsuit from authors, who accused the Amazon-backed company of illegally downloading and copying their books to teach its AI system, in among the first deals reached by creators over novel legal issues raised by the technology. The settlement was reached on Aug. 26. Lawyers for authors on Friday notified the court on the terms of the deal. Authors who opt into the agreement will be eligible to share in the $1.5 billion settlement fund, plus additional payments of $3,000 per book allegedly used by Anthropic for training. They can also decline to participate in the deal and individually pursue copyright infringement claims.
The law is finally beginning to catch up with this AI crap, hopefully this will be the first signs of the AI bubble bursting.
As educational institutions around the country capitulate, Denver's public school system said Tuesday that it would defy demands from the Trump administration to discriminate against transgender students even if it means losing federal funds. Alex Marrero, the superintendent of Denver Public Schools (DPS), said the school "will protect all of their students from this hostile administration," by refusing to implement a ban on gender-neutral bathrooms mandated by Trump's Department of Education.
Everywhere people big and small are finding the courage to stand up to Trumps cruelty and stupidity.
This summer, the United States was alive with nonviolent resistance. In Los Angeles, anti-ICE protests used dancing and music to create joyful defiance. In Washington, D.C., when federal forces attempted to assert control over the nation’s capital, grassroots groups quickly organized an effective response. Meanwhile, No Kings Day, on June 14, became one of the largest days of collective action in U.S. history, with estimates suggesting between two and 4.8 million people participating in over 2,150 actions nationwide. Yet, despite all the vibrancy and people in the streets, one nagging question keeps popping up from viral social media posts to mainstream media trend pieces: Why isn’t Gen Z protesting? Anthony Vidal Torres, communications director of the youth activist group Get Free, thinks this observation is short-sighted.
Don’t underestimate the younger generation.
Polling showing that a majority of President Donald Trump’s voters support vaccines was shared with several Republicans lawmakers’ staffers in a closed-door meeting Wednesday, according to two people familiar with the meeting. NBC News obtained a copy of a memo, dated Aug. 26, summarizing the poll results. It was conducted by veteran Republican pollsters Tony Fabrizio and Bob Ward and concluded “that there is broad unity across party lines supporting vaccines such as measles (MMR), shingles, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (TDAP), and Hepatitis B.” Fabrizio and Ward presented the findings during the meeting, the sources said.

As Trump starts to ratchet up his saber-rattling, shooting at boats, amassing fighter jets and troops in Puerto Rico, and renaming the Department of Defense* to the Department of War, people are losing their minds about “he is going to declare war so he can cancel the elections!” No. He isn’t. At least, he can’t. A president has no authority to cancel or even postpone elections, even during times of war. (And he also has no authority to declare war, only Congress can do that.) (*Actually he is giving it a “second name” of Department of War, because he can’t change the name of a department, Congress has to do that. So it's like a nickname that he wants everyone to call it.) Anyways, for several reasons, including our Constitution, the president cannot suspend, let alone cancel, elections, even during wartime. Heck, during a war is one of the *best* times for a sitting administration to have an election, because generally speaking the people don’t want a change of administrations in the middle of, you know, a war!
I know some people are worried about this, but don’t. Because its not something Trump can do.
This is a message that I've been meaning to get out there for a while, probably since the Large Loathsome Legislation was passed. That being said, I think it's one that applies to just about everything we see the current administration doing now. It may even be one I might have to revisit, as I'm still currently working on the whole optimism thing. The minute the results were called for 2024, I felt very terrified, convinced that America was over and that nothing good would happen ever again. Guess what? It's over six months into Trump's second term, and neither are true. While things are undoubtedly bad with him at the helm, all the work the judiciary has done in slowing down the wheels of fascism have given us a chance to do our part. Showing up to special elections, providing support for our communities, etc., and most importantly, making our voices heard. As a proud Democrat, I and so many others at r/VoteDEM are proud of the ways our party has got the message out at what the Trump admin is doing, and how they're fighting back, especially since the OBBB passed.
Nothing is hopeless, we can win this, we just have to keep fighting.
As a result of a petition filed by conservation groups, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced it will declare three beaches in Puerto Rico as protected areas for leatherback sea turtles. The decision, known as a 90-day finding, is the first procedural step toward protecting leatherback nesting beaches on Puerto Rico’s California Beach in Maunabo, Tres Hermanos Beach in Añasco and Grande Beach in Arecibo. The Fish and Wildlife Service must now conduct a thorough review of the best available science before determining whether to increase habitat protections under the Endangered Species Act.
Hooray for the little baby turtles
Maryland Democrat Jamie Raskin noted that if Nigel Farage is so concerned about freedom of speech and the implications of the Online Safety Act then he might have a better case to speak out it in the UK, rather than in the US. “Putin-loving, free speech impostor and Trump sycophant” “He should go and advance the positions he’s taking here in Congress today, in Parliament, which is [also] meeting today if he’s serious about it,” Raskin said, noting that Farage missed Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) to attend the hearing in Washington. Raskin continued: “To the people of the UK who think this Putin-loving, free speech impostor and Trump sycophant will protect freedom in your country, come on over to America and see what Trump and MAGA are doing to destroy our freedom. “You might think twice before you let Mr. Farage ‘Make Britain Great Again’.”
Its true and he should say it.
Now for another musical interlude: Gavin Degraw I don’t want to be

A reminder we aren’t the only game in town. Good news is everywhere if you know where to look.
Calling boss a dickhead was not a sackable offence, tribunal rules Woman who was immediately sacked when she insulted her manager during a row wins unfair dismissal case Jamie Grierson Thu 4 Sep 2025 07.29 EDT Managers and supervisors brace yourselves: calling the boss a dickhead is not necessarily a sackable offence, a tribunal has ruled. The ruling came in the case of an office manager who was sacked on the spot when – during a row – she called her manager and another director dickheads. Kerrie Herbert has been awarded almost £30,000 in compensation and legal costs after an employment tribunal found she had been unfairly dismissed.
And this is why unions are important, so you don’t get fired for stupid crap.
Newsmax, the right-wing TV news outlet, filed suit Wednesday against Fox News and its parent company, alleging the conservative media powerhouse had illegally sought to suppress the smaller challenger's growth in cable news. "It came to our attention that Fox has had agreements - all of them shrouded in confidentiality and secrecy - with cable companies and other pay-TV distributors to block Newsmax and other independent [conservative] cable news channels from getting carriage," Newsmax founder and CEO Christopher Ruddy tells NPR.
Oh! Speaking of dickheads, guess whose fighting again?
A bipartisan group of House members has unveiled new legislation that would ban lawmakers from trading individual stocks. For more than a decade, a series of bills have been proposed to address such trades, but differences about the details and a lack of support from top congressional leaders stalled past reform efforts. But in announcing the new bill on Wednesday, a group of leading conservatives and progressives said the issue is ripe for action in 2025 and that they had agreed on a new plan. Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy and Rhode Island Democrat Seth Magaziner led the process of crafting the bipartisan effort to end lawmakers trading stocks. Roy told reporters on Wednesday that the bill was the result of years of negotiations aimed at addressing demands from voters worried about insider trading.
Considering my former Congressman was busted for insider trading this is a good idea.
When calamity hits and volcanic ash blankets the land, it is commonly perceived negatively, for many obvious reasons. However, novel research from the University of Barcelona demonstrates that this seemingly gloomy substance has enormous promise as an energy storage medium, providing a cost-effective alternative for the renewable energy sector.
Now and forever, Science is awesome.
Trump's agenda on various issues, including immigration, tariffs, and the restructuring of the federal government, is facing legal challenges, and judges across the country have at times sided with plaintiffs bringing these cases. Judges ruled against Trump on Tuesday in three separate cases surrounding his deployment of federal troops to Los Angeles, deportations and the firing of an FTC commissioner.
Bet you didn’t think we’d get another one of these this week. Surprise three for one!
And now, for Pokemon.
And now the cute corner
And we wrap up with the organizing spotlight
Win the Majority 2026
Laughter can be a political martial art
fighting fascism through solidarity
And that does it for this week, see you all next Monday.
