Cornyn closes gap with Paxton in recent Texas Senate polls Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) has closed the gap in recent polling as he squares off against state Attorney General Ken Paxton in a bitterly fought primary, though observers acknowledge he still faces a tough reelection bid. A Texas Southern University poll released in August showed Paxton holding a 5-point lead over Cornyn among likely primary voters, down from 9-points in the same poll released in May. Meanwhile, an Emerson College poll also released last month showed Cornyn leading Paxton by 1 point. The recent polls signal a tightening race after early surveys found Paxton, a staunch conservative, with double-digit leads in some cases, and point to what is sure to be one of the most fiercely fought primaries next year. thehill.com/...

Adams formally picks ‘Safe and Affordable’ line for mayoral ballot, dumps ‘EndAntiSemitism’ column Mayor Adams has abandoned his effort to appear on two ballot lines — “EndAntiSemitism” and “Safe & Affordable”— in November’s mayoral election, opting to run only on the latter. For months, the city’s Board of Elections told Adams he couldn’t as an independent candidate appear on more than one line on November’s ballot. Adams’ campaign contended the board was wrong and that he could appear on both columns, even saying the mayor was exploring legal action to try to force the panel to let him lock in the two lines. However, in a previously undisclosed Aug. 22 letter to the board, Adams campaign attorney Vito Pitta wrote that the mayor — who made combating antisemitism and support for Israel early focuses of his long-shot reelection bid — is settling for the “Safe & Affordable” line to comply with the board’s determination. www.nydailynews.com/...

New York's highest court begins hearing arguments in state's new even-year election law The New York state Court of Appeals began hearing arguments Monday over the constitutionality of the new state law that will move many local elections to line up with state and federal elections in even-numbered years. At issue is a law passed by the state Legislature and signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in December 2023 that moves several local elections outside of New York City to even-numbered years starting this year, with the exception of some city or village elections, and races for county clerk, sheriff, district attorneys, local judges and others protected in the state Constitution. A Republican-led challenge has brought the law through a lengthy legal battle, arguing it conflicts individual county charters. Twenty New York counties are chartered, meaning they have locally drafted and approved laws outlining the structure and authority of county government, and there have been three separate amendments in the state Constitution allowing for and protecting counties' abilities to govern through charters. Challengers also argued the law is not a "general law," which applies alike to all counties other than those wholly included within a city, all cities, all towns or all villages.
