Another Saturday Night - Lyrics that Land [1]

I have long said that art either speaks to you or it doesn’t, whether that’s music, literature, sculpture, performance art—all of it. And a key part of music speaking to people is the lyrics. My musical tastes are replete with some of the best lyricists around—Prine; Snider (Todd, not Dee); Keen; Stones; Who; Floyd; Berry; Diddley; Smiths; White Stripes; Marley; Hendrix; Nirvana; Nobel winner Bob Dylan; the underappreciated Vince Bell; the godfather of the blues, Robert Johnson; and many, many more. Tonight we celebrate songs with lyrics that speak to us, and the songwriters who have gifted them to us.

I begin with my favorite songwriting duo, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones. One can argue that the lyrics that resonate most deeply are either timeless or speak powerfully to a moment in time. This song does both—I DARE you to tell me these lyrics don’t apply to the US today the same way they did in 1978 Britain (or 2025 Britain, for that matter).

All over, people are changing their votes

Along with their overcoats

If Adolf Hitler flew in today,

They’d send a limousine anyway

Another omission you might have noticed above is the Beatles. Like Strummer/Jones, Lennon and McCartney had a publishing partnership, where they both got credit for a song even if only one of them wrote it. I honestly couldn’t decide which song to post, so I used a random number generator to pick one (MATH GEEK!) and the result was sheer perfection. The lyrics are beautifully dreamy, evoking fantastical images, gently carrying the listener to a different place. (dammit, I’m not crying, you’re crying!)

Beatles :: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (video from Yellow Submarine)

Sometimes, a single line in a song can hit hard, resonate deeply, even cause us to think differently about the world we live in. In the case of my final tune, one lyric encapsulates the human condition quite well (don’t worry; I won’t go on and on about it).

Bolts from above hit the people down below

People in this world, we have no place to go

New Order :: Temptation
