Last month Trump fired Erika McEntarfer, director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, because her organization released a poor jobs report. This month the BLS did it again: released another weak jobs report.

U.S. employers added just 22,000 jobs last month as the labor market continued to cool due to uncertainty over President Donald Trump’s economic policies. Hiring decelerated from 79,000 in July, the Labor Department said Friday, and came in below the roughly 80,000 economists had expected for August. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3%, also worse than expected and the highest level since 2021.(Huffpost)

Job losses are hitting Black women hardest. Trump’s job cuts have focused on them but the loss of DEI programs is a double whammy.

Economists say that Black women are being hit especially hard by Mr. Trump’s policies, which are also rippling through the private sector as corporations have abandoned their diversity, equity and inclusion practices and related jobs, many of which were held by Black women. The most recent labor statistics show that nationwide, Black women lost 319,000 jobs in the public and private sectors between February and July of this year, the only major female demographic to experience significant job losses during this five-month period, according to an analysis by Katica Roy, a gender economist. White women saw a job increase of 142,000, and Hispanic women of 176,000, over the same time period. White men saw the largest increase among groups, 365,000, over the same time period. (NYT)

The problem with numbers.

Democracy Docket points out a more alarming threat to voting than redistricting and attacks on mail-in ballots. Trump is breaking in the system to accept that a declaration of emergency permits him to do whatever he chooses. He (or his successors) could declare an emergency to excuse tampering with the 2026 election.

RFK is losing support from the folks on his own side.

The New York Post editorial board on Thursday went scorched earth on Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The usually pro-Donald Trump tabloid — owned by conservative billionaire Rupert Murdoch ― flamed vaccine skeptic Kennedy’s appearance at a tense Senate hearing, during which he was ripped by lawmakers over his vaccine policies. Read the full editorial at the New York Post. (from Huffpost)

Social media is beating up on him too. Great work, everybody! Now do Pete Hegseth.

A word from the guy who will support whatever Trump tells him to.

x You had your chance to remove and bar him from the presidency after Jan 6. And you chickened out.

Grok isn’t Artificial Intelligence. It’s Artificial Elon. Check out this shared NYT article to see fascinating examples of how Grok’s answers have gone from AI-ishly normal to right leaning as Musk has made adjustments. It’s a great demonstration of why not to trust the wisdom of public AI offerings.

Elon Musk has said Grok, the A.I.-powered chatbot that his company developed, should be “politically neutral” and “maximally truth-seeking.” But in practice, Mr. Musk and his artificial intelligence company, xAI, have tweaked the chatbot to make its answers more conservative on many issues, according to an analysis of thousands of its responses by The New York Times. The shifts appear, in some cases, to reflect Mr. Musk’s political priorities.

But now he has Tesla to think about. If he can meet aggressive new targets Musk could be a trillionaire. (The spell checker says there’s no such word as “trillionaire.” There hasn’t ever been one.)

Elon Musk could become the world’s first trillionaire if he hits targets set by Tesla, under a scheme disclosed by the electric car company he runs and in which he is the largest shareholder. Tesla outlined the terms of the incentive package, unprecedented in corporate history, in a section of its latest stock market update that began: “Yes, you read that correctly.” Musk, the company said, will have to increase the value of Tesla from just over $1tn now to $8.5tn over 10 years. (The Guardian)

Can he do it?

x I think the US should welcome businesspeople from US-allied democracies who are investing in America, rather than send federal agents to harass and arrest them. Sorry to get so partisan, but that's how I feel.

Foreign postal services are ending package service to the US because of tariffs.

x I have an unusual problem with the elimination of the "de minimis" tariff exemption. When I give talks abroad, the host often offers a lovely but awkward gift — say, a 20 lb coffee table book on the history of their city. So I ask them to mail it. No more. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Remember your oath! Veterans call on veterans to come to Washington DC — and prepare to go to other cities as well — to take a stand against ICE and National Guard. They continue to fight, in this case against enemies:domestic.

What will we do while here: Inform our National Guard siblings of their rights to refuse unlawful orders. Educate and encourage. Hold National Guard officers to account for accepting the orders to INTIMIDATE the American people. Respond to ICE and MPD checkpoints and stops throughout the city to protest, shame them, and assist their victims. We will work in shifts so that we maintain a 24 hour presence. (RememberYourOath)

Kilmar Abrego Garcia is still facing more punishment than most immigrants, apparently for being so newsworthy. He’s still holding on.

x They simply won’t let him be. During an immigration court hearing on Thursday, the Trump administration cautioned that if Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia succeeds in reopening his asylum case in the U.S., officials will move forward with efforts to send him back to El Salvador.
