While visiting the Bodega Bay Headlands last week, I saw dozens of Brandt’s Cormorants resting on the rocks offshore. As I started taking photos, I realized that a Brandt’s Cormorant was taking care of their offspring.
Keeping an eye on the action, I was able to capture a great interaction between parent and offspring.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
So let us know what you are seeing in your own part of the world and share your observations. Seen any interesting plants, bugs or critters? Are there birds in your yard or at your feeders? Seen any beautiful landscapes, cool rocks or geological features? Taken a trip and viewed the wildlife? We love to see what you see, so please share photos. We like all photos. You can post a comment but we always love a diary — remember what is common in your area maybe very rare and exotic to the rest of us.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.
It seems that the mom is attempting to wean the fledgling and so stopped the beak-to- beak feeding quickly and walked away. But the youngster was not finished. So the baby followed.
Here’s what happened:
Baby in the lower right calls for food
Mom responded with a quick feeding
Mom’s done but baby is asking for more
As mom walks away, baby follows frantically flapping their wings.
Baby catches up to Mom
Another bird tells the Baby to back off.
Baby keeps pestering Mom for food — I want more Mom!
Mom gives in and feeds the baby again
Baby is now satisfied
After a blazing hot Labor Day weekend with temperatures in the triple digits, the weather is cooling down with temperatures expected to be in the mid 80s this weekend.
I will be with my family this weekend. So my responses will be sporadic and probably mostly on Saturday.
What’s up in your neck of the woods?
