The 1998 study paper that fraudulently asserted in the prestigious British medical journal The Lancet that vaccines cause autism was led by physician Andrew Wakefield. The paper has since been fully retracted, and Wakefield stripped of his medical license. The results are not replicable. The fraud involved data selection, data manipulation, and two undisclosed conflicts of interest.

The distrustful reaction could be expected to be greater in an autistic child, making a previously unnoticed pathology quite evident, even to the most obtuse parent. It’s the fallacy ad hoc ergo propter hoc. Do parents who notice the autism first, before getting their child vaccinated, conclude that autism causes vaccinations?
