For my entire life, Republican have campaigned as champions of small government. They have pledged to shrink government, to narrow its scope and limit its reach in the name of freedom. Repeatedly, voters were assured these were not simply political positions, they were deeply held moral values, foundational to the identity of both the individuals and the party.
Right now, your current conduct seems more about opportunism than principle; what you are doing as well as what you are not doing seems impossible to understand in light of the principles that the Republican Party claimed it held for the last 40 years. Was your belief in small government nothing more than empty rhetoric that you trotted out when you wanted to win an election?
Sending troops into American cities is not consistent with any interpretation of small or limited government.
Using federal dollars to purchase a 10% stake in Intel is inconsistent with any understanding of small government.
Coercing institutions of higher learning to adopt or end certain practices, by withholding or threatening to withhold grant money, is much more like naked authoritarianism than the limited government conservatism that Republicans have long advocated.
I keep expecting my members of Congress to say something publicly, to defend the principles that they claimed to believe their entire political careers.
The whole world is watching. And while they watch, you seem to be casually abandoning the principles that you once claimed you held to dear.
I presume that you ran for public office to be a leader. Leadership requires integrity, strength, and risk, not craven silence pretending to be tactical shrewdness.
If you still believe and the principles you once advocated, your silence is unconscionable. If you have changed your views, then you owe the people of Utah a public explanation of your new values.
