A stumbling block we are having with discussing our current political state of affairs is that our political language is lacking the proper terminology to describe that state. But we can draw parallels to another area of interpersonal relationships that has a long history of upstarts taking ironbound intransigent contrarian positions that are totally at odds to the previously-accepted agreed-upon norm. That other area, of course, is Religion. The weapons applied to instances of that contrarianism by the guardians of that norm are fighting words like “heresy”, “anathema”, and “excommunication”.
To back up a bit, I’m recalling a Civics class I had to take during my Senior year of High School, 1959-1960, taught by one of the young male teachers in the school, all of whom were WWII vets. We all understood why they’d had to do their part to put down a would-be world dictator. The message of that class that stuck with me was that our Founding Fathers had been trying to create a government governed by generally-agreed-upon carefully-crafted laws, as opposed to being ruled by the momentary desires of powerful men, as was largely the case in Europe. Looking at you, King George III! In that class, at that time, it was believed that the Founding Fathers’ attempt had been generally successful, and was generally bulletproof.
Trump is committing a great heresy against the intentions of our Founding Fathers as he installs his personal desires for how the USA and the world should run in place of everything that went before him. What he is doing is equivalent to what Martin Luther did for religion. The Protestant schism away from Catholicism that started with Luther has since fractured into finer and finer subdivisions, whereas the Catholic side has largely remained a solid block. The appearance is that, in a future without Trump, his movement will see the same loss of cohesion. Luther’s schism eventually led to incidents of great violence, including the Thirty Years War and the Irish “Troubles”. Some voices on the Trump side talk like they are itching for a civil war to advance their cause. Replies to those voices have been along the lines of “You’ll discover that the MAGAs aren’t the only ones who possess guns”.
Beyond recognizing that Trump’s individual actions are heresies, there is the problem of his Executive Orders’ firehose effect, which the traditional guardrails of our Constitutional government entities (Congress, Courts) cannot react to with timely speed. The time lags involved have resulted in perceptions that he is being successful, which is the intent of wielding his firehose.
