Graham Platner Brings Down the House in ME Senate Campaign [1]

A Gallup poll last month showed only 8% of Democrats support Israel’s actions in Gaza. A more recent Quinnipiac poll showed that 75% of Democrats and 60% of Independents consider those actions to be genocide. Similar percentages support ending U.S. aid for Israel. Even a fair percentage of Republicans polled agreed.

Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Doctors without Borders, the Israeli HR groups B’tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, as well as the vast majority of genocide scholars have called it genocide.

This issue is no longer confined to progressives. It cuts across the political spectrum. Yet most Democrats in the House and many in the Senate as well as the Senate and House leadership continue to support business as usual: sending billions to Israel--$24 Billion in the past two years--extracted from taxpayers struggling to pay for day care and medical care.

If the disconnect between elected officials and the voting base is not corrected, the Democratic party risks depressing its own vote. On the bright side, the best way to win elections and to defeat the fascism enveloping this country is to select strong candidates who voice the concerns of the voters. Primary campaigns are already gearing up.

Not only are Democrats against U.S. support for Israel’s Gaza and West Bank policies, a great many are passionate about the issue. Take a look at embedded video of the response to Graham Platner’s “Not Bombs” line in Portland: www.commondreams.org/...

As Platner’s campaign gathers support, expect Shumer and DSCC chair Kirsten Gillibrand push 77-year-old governor Janet Mills into the race and pressure her support the party line: Blank-check aid for Israel no matter what it does or how much it costs. Or, if that doesn’t work, to drum up another Israel hawk as a candidate. If Platner sustains the grassroots enthusiasm evident in his Portland speech shown in the video, it will show that the AIPAC grip on the Party, already weakening, can be broken.

Already this summer 27 Democratic Senators voted for one or both of the Sanders resolutions calling for a block on weapons transfers to Israel. thehill.com/… We need to keep up the momentum.

I’d love to hear the comments from anyone on the ground in Maine!

This is the first of a series of posts I intend to write on key Senate and House primary campaigns that could help determine the prospects of the Democratic Party. Next up is the primary for the open Senate seat in Michigan.
