Denver reporter goes there with Trump's tactics: 'It's authoritarianism' [1]

When I was in journalism school at Carolina a quarter-century ago, I learned that there is no bias in calling a spade a spade. However, if you believe Donald Trump and his minions, calling a spade a spade is being “VERY UNFAIR” and “FAKE NEWS!” Long before Trump, though, we’ve seen only a few reporters willing to stick out their necks in this way.
It’s why a recent commentary by a reporter at Denver’s NBC affiliate, KUSA, is particularly refreshing. On his nightly show, “Next,” reporter Kyle Clark gave Trump both barrels over Trump’s decision to move Space Command from Colorado Springs to Alabama. Watch here.
x COMMENTARY: If this was happening in another nation, we'd call it by name. It's authoritarianism. — Kyle Clark (@kylec.bsky.social) 2025-09-03T00:59:13.274Z
Clark was unsparing, noting that Trump pulled Space Command because Colorado had the insolence to vote against him in 2024—as it did in 2016 and 2020. He then recalled that Trump was linking military decision to the Big Lie. Anyone who has been paying attention over the years would conclude that Clark was being remarkably kind when he called Trump’s move “a dangerous escalation.”
But Clark wasn’t done. He noted that Trump’s ranting about mail-in ballots doesn’t wash in light of data that showed Trump actually carried half of the states where 30 percent of votes were cast by mail. Moreover, Clark reminded us, Trump was unwilling to send troops into red states with higher crime rates than the blue states where he was sending troops.
While conceding that some cities need federal assistance to fight crime and that an argument can be made for Alabama being the home of Space Command, Clark noted the real issue was Trump’s penchant for “using the military for his personal advantage in domestic violence.” According to Clark, Trump has made clear “in word and in deed” that there’s a way to avoid having troops come to your state and a way to keep your state’s military installations—“just vote for him.”
And then Clark went for the jugular.
If all of this was happening in another nation, we would not hesitate to describe it clearly. If it was Kazakhstan instead of Colorado, Caracas instead of Chicago, we would call it by name. It’s authoritarianism.”
Ouch. I’m surprised Trump hasn’t rage-tweeted at KUSA’s owner, Tegna—the former television division of Gannett. After all, such insolence isn’t allowed when speaking about The Messiah, Lord Donald Trump, The Most Merciful.
This is a bigger deal than you may think. KUSA is the highest-rated station in Denver, a rank it has held for almost half a century. Consider the nature of the market—once you get outside Denver and Fort Collins, you’re getting into some very rural and very red territory in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. Plus, Tegna is reportedly about to be bought by Nexstar Media Group. Given Trump’s willingness to shake down media outlets who cross him, Clark’s report took particular guts.
Believer it or not, this was just a sample. Watch the whole thing here.
More of this, please.
