Compare & Contrast [1]

The other night I watched American Experience on PBS, an episode about Richard Nixon. I was struck, not by similarities with current conditions in the U.S., but with the stark differences.

Nixon was an ambitious politician who used people and said many things that were not true, as is the case with Donald Trump. But unlike Trump, he was coherent when speaking and (publicly) left the worst insults and defamatory speculations to others to deliver.

The more remarkable contrast, I thought, was seen after the Watergate scandal started. There were actually a number of Republican who would not make excuses for Nixon’s behavior, some even calling for him to resign or face impeachment. Some were insisting on accountability!

Nixon realized he was caught, and resigned rather than be impeached by a congress that was less polarized than today. Trump’s response to losing an election was to promote an insurrection; if Republicans in the Senate had not become such spineless lickspittles, he would have been impeached and turned out of office (he would not resign).
