A Tale of Two Paintings [1]

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... oh, hell, it’s just the worst of times …

Apparently jealous of all the attention Christian supremacist transportation secretary Sean Duffy has gotten for vowing to rehang the gigantic Jesus painting at the Merchant Marine Academy, crusader-tattoo-festooned defense secretary Petey Hegseth has found the most thoroughly offensive painting he could find to rehang at West Point — a 20-foot tall portrait of Robert E. Lee in his Confederate uniform, complete with a slave that Lee was fighting to keep enslaved.

As those who follow my posts here know, the former reality TV star and now transportation secretary in the MAGA regime (where being a former reality TV star somehow makes one qualified to be secretary of transportation) Sean Duffy made headlines when he vowed to return an enormous painting of Jesus to the administrative building at the Merchant Marine Academy — a painting that the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), acting on behalf of a group of the Academy’s alumni, midshipmen, faculty, and staff, had gotten moved to the Academy’s chapel in 2023.

Not to be outdone in grabbing headlines, the former Fox News host and now defense secretary in the MAGA regime (where being a former Fox News host somehow makes one qualified to be secretary of defense) Petey Hegseth found his own piece of “fine” art to grab some headlines with — the endearing portrait of Robert E. Lee with one of his slaves (you know, one of those slaves who Hegseth’s pastor says had a mutual affection with their masters).

So now we have the whole package. Duffy’s returning of the giant Jesus painting at the Merchant Marine Academy was just plain old Christian nationalism; Hegseth’s rehanging of Confederate General Lee with his slave at West Point completes the totalitarian trinity known as White Christian nationalism.
