Top Comments: Trying to Schedule an Appointment with My MoC's Edition [1]

As I wrote back in June, my sister, some friends and I all went to DC for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. During the trip, because of all the people and difficulty getting around, we did not get to the museums we wanted or spend enough time in the ones we did visit. It was the consensus we should come back to DC relatively soon because who knows which museums will be functionally destroyed during the modern Reign of Terror (been listening to a podcast on the first and second French Revolutions). Considering we would have more time to plan, I asked if anyone was interested in me trying to get meetings on The Hill through the organization that does an annual trip down for lobbying which I typically join. I figured since they know the people in the offices who schedule appointments, they would be able to do it for me or at least give me names of people whom I could contact.

Knowing the organization has changed significantly from the time my mother was basically running it, I still thought maybe they would care enough since I regularly go down there with them and would provide some help. I was sent a one page doc file with instructions on how to get an appointment with my MoC’s offices that was completely misleading at least for me. The key piece of information was to go to their website to find the name of either the office scheduler or the appointments secretary, None of the sites I visited had that information or the information of anyone who worked in the offices. My two senator’s sites had a form to fill out to request a meeting but my congresswoman’s site did not.

I fill out the form to request an office meeting in DC for both of my senators. I received a reply from Senator Gillbrand’s scheduler who cc’d the two aides in the office most relevant for the topics I wanted to discuss and told me to email them personally which I did. After a couple of emails back and forth with them, I had an appointment for Mon, 9/29. WhooHoo! I did not hear back from Senator Schumer’s office.

Senator Schumer’s Long Island office is about 45 minutes east of where I live which is not great for a drop in, but I had to be in NYC to help my sister bring some stuff for her new school. There was enough time and his office was only about 25 blocks from her school that I decided to stop by there to see if I could speak to someone. I was able to speak to someone who came down to the lobby. Stupidly, I forgot to get a business card and thanks to my hearing impairment, I am not sure what her name is though I know it begins with A (helps when your name begins with the same latter). It has been a week, and I have still not heard from her nor anyone else about my request. I am kind of back to square one there. I think I will fill out the form again and maybe have someone call while I am with them, so I don’t have to deal with my limited ability to hear on the phone.

As for my congresswoman, I have to be on the North Shore tomorrow to pay a shiva call. I think I will stop by her local office on the way and try a pop in there. This time I will definitely get business card from whomever I meet. Calling her office is futile as I have never had anyone pick up nor call me back. Strange considering I am running unopposed to be a County Party commissioner. You’d think that would get me somewhere.

Since I do have one appointment scheduled (Yay), worse comes to worse, I may ask them if it would be possible to get a personal tour of the Capitol for our group of 4 from someone in the office. I have had the pleasure of that in the past. Usually they give me passes to the gallery where we can sit for a few minutes hoping someone is actually speaking. With the Senate, that isn’t always happening, but it will be two days before the end of the fiscal year, so there could be some activity on the Floor. If anyone has any advice on getting a hold of someone, I am all ears.

Oh and just in case anyone cares, we plan to visit the American History Museum, the Museum of African American History and Culture, The Museum of the American Indian and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum that weekend.
