Past and present Palestinian Divisions have opened the doors to catastrophe. [1]

The headline in the article I am about to use is less well-reasoned than the article itself.
It does not pardon the crimes against humanity that have been a constant feature of the current tragedy. [either/both sides]. This is the position of ICC and ICJ.
The piece is by Jean-Pierre Filiu, a historian and professor at Sciences Po Paris.
It is behind a paywall; some of you might be able to find a free copy elsewhere. I’ll try to summarise it as best as I can. It follows similar reasoning to my own thoughts on the matter. [hence my title of the diary]
Hamas bears overwhelming responsibility for the Palestinian catastrophe — Le Monde.
*All the bolding in the block quotes is mine
Palestinian nationalism has always suffered from a crushing power imbalance in favor of the Zionist movement, and then of the State of Israel. However, it is worth questioning the responsibility of certain Palestinian leaders in two historic disasters: the Nakba ("catastrophe") of 1948, with its exodus of more than half the Arab population of Palestine, and the current catastrophe in the devastated Gaza Strip.
*For details, see the first comment by Mettle Fatigue
The move succeeded in dividing Palestinian nationalism, first by reducing it to its Islamic component, then by pitting Husseini's supporters against those of Nashashibi, their traditional rivals. Such maneuvers helped crush the 1936-1939 Arab revolt. Exiled in 1937, Husseini allied himself with Adolf Hitler four years later, even as the majority of the Palestinian population supported the democratic powers against the Axis.
Husseini [Islamic] regained his position with the Palestinians in 1945, and thus deservedly the hatred of the Jewish people for his alliance with the designer of the Holocaust. He then, in 1947, refused the partition of Palestine into two separate [Jewish and Arab] states.
His return to power was aided by his use of one-upmanship. If this sounds vaguely familiar, refer to the 2024 U.S. election.
These errors, then, in 1948, led to the Nakba. -[Link to the UN]
The parallels with the Islamists in the Gaza Strip are instructive. From 1967 onward, the Israeli occupying army favored the Islamists at the expense of the nationalists of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). In 1987, the Islamists swung from one extreme to the other by founding Hamas, which was dedicated to the destruction of Israel, as the PLO was committed to recognizing Israel and reopened the path to the "two-state solution." The intra-Palestinian split culminated in 2007, with the rupture between Hamas, which took control of Gaza, and the Palestinian Authority (PA), which administers part of the West Bank on behalf of the PLO.
The split was exacerbated by Netanyahu -[Link to the Times of Israel]
From the main article:
Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli prime minister from 2009 to 2021 and again since 2022, has done everything to widen the gap between the Gaza Strip, besieged on all sides, and the West Bank, left wide open to settlement expansion
Neither the Islamists nor the Messianic Zionists give a damn about their own population, nor the crimes they commit.
Hamas continues to put its party's interests before those of a desperate population. There is no doubt that history's judgment will be damning for the Palestinian Islamists. For now, however, it is the women, men and children of Gaza who are dying.
My Notes:
The responsibility for initiating the catastrophes lay with the Islamists, but this in no way pardons the crimes committed during the reprisals.
For peace to occur, the populations on both sides need to turn their backs on the fundamentalists because that way leads to permanent tragedy.
Please, stop the slaughter.
