I spent about three and a half hours trying to find content and the right tone for tonight’s Shade. Not much was written or even read in that time. The diary and comments in Saturday’s This Week In The War On Women: Labor Day Edition helped me find some sort of pace. I’m trying to do a gentler Labor Day post. It’s a long weekend and there’s not much likely to happen. Let’s recap and try to find a happier place, pacing ourselves for the long fight.

All of the best labor movement songs are folk songs. I’ll start with this from Natalie Merchant via Ed Tracey in the comments of WoW, but, since we’re in a lull, I’d recommend going through the TWITWOW. My stuff is going to be boring. We’ll wait…

CC has a new diary up. I don’t think I’ll quote it. I’d recommend that you read it in its entirety.

Mass Shooters Are Not Disproportionately Transgender

✂️ Rather, multiple independent databases tracking mass shootings confirm the opposite: The Gun Violence Archive, which tracks shootings in which four or more people (not including the shooter) are shot or killed, estimated last year that fewer than 1 percent of the shootings it reviewed in the last decade were carried out by trans individuals. Mother Jones has its own database tracking shootings in which “three or more victims were killed in an indiscriminate public rampage.” As I wrote in 2023, very, very few of those were carried out by individuals who were not cisgender men. One hundred and thirty four of the 141 mass shootings tracked by Mother Jones since 1982 were carried out by men with no known history of identifying as trans or nonbinary. Two were carried out by women believed to be cisgender. Two more were carried out by a man and a woman, also believed to be cisgender, working together. “From a statistical basis,” I wrote, “transgender individuals are much more prone to being the victims of violence than they are likely to commit it.” ✂️

x Tackling gun violence shouldn’t be a Democrat or Republican issue. We should work together as Americans to stop another act of terror from happening again. That starts with a ban on assault weapons. Our children deserve to grow up without the fear and trauma of gun violence.

Minnesota MAGA Rep Forgets Voting Against School Safety Bill

Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer, 64, cried senior moment on live TV as his attempt to attack Gov. Tim Walz blew up in his face. In a Sunday appearance on ABC’s This Week, Emmer suggested Walz was to blame for a lack of resources to prevent more mass shootings after last week’s tragic incident at a Catholic school in Minneapolis. The shooting left two children, ages 8 and 10, dead and injured around 20 people. Emmer used his appearance to play up calls for more school resources to help. “It’s going to be very important that the schools have the resources,” he told co-host Martha Raddatz. ✂️ Raddatz, not letting Emmer off the hook, went back to the bill. “This bill sounds like it might have done that,” she said. Realizing Raddatz wasn’t going to let up on his voting history, Emmer turned to outrage and then attempted to blame the shooter’s inner circle for the violent attack. ✂️

That’s enough of that! I have no hopes that Emmer will be out of the House any time soon. That’s the House majority whip, and he’s a total as shat. He’s also mathematically impaired.

How beavers could help fight wildfires

For Canadians, the beaver is more than a buck-toothed rodent — it's a national emblem, etched on nickels and central to the country's origin story. Now, a new study from the U.S. suggests this symbolic animal can make arid Western landscapes more resilient by blunting drought, slowing floods and shielding areas from wildfire with the dams they build. The study, conducted by researchers at Stanford University and the University of Minnesota and published in Nature, analyzed more than 1,500 beaver ponds across 40 streams in the western United States. The study found the size of those ponds wasn't random. Instead, they followed predictable rules tied to dam length, stream power and surrounding vegetation. The findings add weight to a growing body of evidence that beavers may be acting as ecosystem engineers, reshaping waterways in ways that benefit not just their own survival, but that of entire landscapes. By slowing streams and spreading water onto flood plains, their dams create lush pockets of habitat that can endure long after fire or drought has swept through. And as climate change drives longer droughts, heavier floods and fiercer wildfire seasons, researchers and land managers are looking for low-cost, natural solutions to build resilience. The study suggests the Canadian icon could be part of the answer — stepping in where human engineering can't. Aerial images reveal scope of beaver engineering ✂️

That last bit is a tease to get you guys to click through. I also read a story that countries bordering Russia (Poland, Lithuania...) are selectively restoring wetlands to stymie an invasion. Ukraine let the beavers do the work in the spring after the invasion to thwart the Russians as well.

Yes, Epstein survivors plan to hold a news conference on Sept. 3. Here's what we know

In August 2025, a claim spread online that survivors of abuse by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein planned to hold a news conference on Sept. 3, 2025, in Washington, D.C. The rumor circulated — often alongside a photo collage of eight women who accused Epstein of sex abuse — on platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram and LinkedIn. Several posts claimed that some survivors would be speaking about their experience publicly for the first time. As of this writing, survivors of abuse by Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, were, in fact, planning to hold a news conference on Sept. 3, as Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Ro Khanna, D-Calif., first announced in Aug. 11 social media posts. In those posts, Massie and Khanna said they would speak at the event about their co-sponsored bill to release the so-called "Epstein files." One of the lawyers representing the survivors, Brad Edwards, confirmed the accuracy of Massie's and Khanna's posts via an Aug. 26 email to Snopes. Thus, we've rated this claim true. ✂️

The Fucking News

What Labor Means Today

Labor Day is when we celebrate the history of the American labor movement, when we exalt the dignity of work and affirm the right to work. Because we’ve been brainwashed. The federal holiday was literally created to defuse public outrage over government strikebreaking and vent energy from a surging labor movement. A movement pissed at the time about being murdered by the government and illionaires. In 1894, railroad workers went on strike. Rail tycoon George Pullman had cut wages and fired workers, some of them already hard-pressed to pay the rents being raised by their landlord, rail tycoon George Pullman. More than 150,000 workers in 27 states struck. The U.S. government struck back. Pres. Grover Cleveland unleashed 14,000 U.S. Marshals, who proceeded to gun down as many as 90 workers. Six days after busting the strike, and killing more than 30 workers, Cleveland signed Labor Day into law as a federal holiday. (Credit to Jacobin for the history lesson.) Today, hard-fought victories of America’s revolutionary labor movement — weekends and the eight-hour workday — are a ceiling beneath which we huddle for safety instead of using it as a launch pad. The dignity of work was originally a religious concept. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has a whole page about its biblical origins. Promoting the dignity of work can be well motivated. But even defenses of it betray toxic thinking about the labor to which we dedicate something like a third of our waking adult lives. ✂️

It’s long and he’s got many valid points and an axe to grind. Click through at your own peril. I quit reading it because I have — ummm — to work to finish tonight’s Shade. “I’ve got to write/for tonight/to paaaartay!”

Opinion: Bad news awaits Republicans returning to DC

Remember back in July when Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) abruptly adjourned the House of Representatives for summer recess? The quick exit gave Republicans an escape from headlines about the Trump administration’s refusal to release files on Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased sex offender. Now, Congress is about to return. And the Epstein drama is just one fire burning among many. As September begins, Republicans remain on the defensive, and this time they won’t be able to call a time-out. The bottom line for congressional Republicans this fall is not governance but survival. The hottest flame coming at them is the burning threat of an Oct. 1 government shutdown, unless there is a budget deal. Despite Republican majorities in both houses, the GOP has failed to pass next year’s appropriations, despite allowing government debt to reach record highs. To get a deal done, Republicans will likely need some Democratic votes. In exchange for their votes, the Democrats have demands in hand. First, they want Republicans to restore cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). Both health care plans were decimated by President Trump’s recently passed tax and budget reconciliation bill. Democrats risk paying a price with voters if they force a government shutdown. But 20 million Americans are about to be hit with higher health insurance premiums due to the Trump cuts. A big bloc of voters across party lines has already told pollsters that they agree with Democrats on this. And with Trump’s approval numbers now in negative territory — especially on his handling of rising health care costs as well as overall inflation — Republicans on the Hill lack his shield from political heat. Congressional Republicans also know that Trump’s name will not be on the 2026 ballot. In the past, his support within the MAGA base shielded them. There is no Trump shield next year, and Republicans are getting dire forecasts for their prospects in the midterms. As Tony Fabrizio, Trump’s pollster, said in July, “midterms election are always a slog” for the majority party and “you are always running against history.” ✂️

Today is…

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day

There’s nothing quite like having a furry footed feline friend bombing around the house and being the best buddy a person can ask for. Dogs may be man’s best friend for some, but cats are our bosom companions, even if they can be aloof and contrary. For many people, that just makes them that much more interesting! And the best of all cats? While admittedly biased, many people would say that the best cats are the orange furred balls of love that are Ginger Cats. Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is here!

(12:58)

Ginger cats are generally male (like 97% or so), calicos are likewise mostly females, by the same amount. I’m watching this video because they share many of the same behaviors.

National Emma M. Nutt Day

Long ago, in 1878, the first telephone operator started working for the Boston Telephone Dispatch Company. What image do you have in your mind when you think of a phone operator? Clean white blouse, sensible ankle length skirt, and a friendly female voice? You may be surprised that the first operator was a man, in fact all of the first ones were. But their reign wasn’t to last, in September of 1878 Emma M Nutt became the first female phone operator, and from that point forward it’s been a woman’s industry. National Emma M. Nutt Day celebrates this pioneer and all she and her fellow operators have done for communication since!

National No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day

National No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day, observed annually on September 1st, celebrates those words in the English language which do not rhyme with any other words. Also known as refractory rhymes, these are words that poets try to avoid using in verse. There are many words in the English language that are difficult to rhyme due to their unique spellings, pronunciations, or origins. Here are a few examples of unrhymable words: Orange: This is often cited as one of the most difficult words to rhyme in the English language due to its lack of common rhyming sounds. Silver: This is another word that is difficult to rhyme due to its unique combination of sounds. Month: This word has a silent "th" sound at the end, which makes it difficult to find a suitable rhyme. Purple: Like orange and silver, the unique combination of sounds in this word makes it difficult to rhyme. Ninth: This word has a silent "th" sound, as well as a unique combination of consonants, which makes it difficult to find a suitable rhyme. Spirit: While there are some words that rhyme with spirit, the "sp" sound at the beginning of the word makes it difficult to find a perfect rhyme. Penguin: This word has a unique combination of sounds and syllables, which makes it difficult to find a suitable rhyme. While these words may be difficult to rhyme, they are still an important part of the English language and can be used creatively in writing and poetry.
