Mike Rose, 1944-2021 was a professor at UCLA and the author of The Mind at Work: Valuing the Intelligence of the American Worker. His book published in 2005 should be read or read again as we celebrate Labor Day, as it is not just a day for games and for cookouts but to honor those who had made this nation great, and to contemplate the revolution in education that’s needed and still ignored.

Mike’s mother was a waitress and his uncle Frank a welder for the Pennsylvania R.R. Recognizing the intellect of their professions he used them as the stating point in his discussions of social class distinctions, separation between the two, labor vs. management, and the ways that our current system of education maintains that divide.

His was the book to read before Matthew Crawford’s Shop Class as Soulcraft , or my own Wisdom of Our Hands: Crafting a Life.

Happy Labor Day.
