…for everyone who has to pay the Trump taxes on imported goods, and for the loonburgers who thought this would
Penalize exporting countries
Lower prices for Americans
Boost polls for Trump and all of the Rs in Congress
Make US farmers more prosperous
Make US businesses boom
Help with his lawsuits against the WSJ
Make us forget about Epstein, Maxwell, the Epstein documents, his thousand+ known victims, his membership at Mar-a-Lago, the tapes, the birthday album, all of the Wrong-Wingers going crazy about Trump and Bondi lying, Maxwell angling for a pardon, Maxwell at SCOTUS…
I think I must have forgotten something that should go on that list. I wonder if any of The Usual Suspects would think that that means their strategery is working. /s
Have you noticed Chris Hayes ranting about these matters in his trademarked style? Have you noticed Rachel Maddow having Too Much Fun with this, as is her wont? Have you noticed the late night comedians? Borowitz? All of the sane economists and legal scholars?
x I can’t wait for the House to come back into session in September and the first order of business will be a vote on releasing the Epstein files. That little fucking weasel Mike Johnson just thinks it’s gonna blow over or people are gonna forget about it between now and then. — Brian Guteking SZN (@packrfan4.bsky.social) July 29, 2025 at 11:24 AM
I can’t wait for the subpoena from the House Oversight Committee to hit the fan. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has been stalling on signing the subpoena. He did issue a subpoena to Ghislaine Maxwell, though.
Rabidly Repellent Republicans Rushing to Ruin/Bad News for Them
As if the above weren’t enough, amirite?
x NEW: i spoke to nine (!) scientists across several disciplines whose work was cited in the new Department of Energy report that downplays the severity of climate change. all of them say their work was misrepresented, cherry picked, and/or lacked context —

x this is a very wonky piece, but the DOE report was cited yesterday in the EPA's justification for rolling back the endangerment finding. it looks like this report, which DOE says will be open for public comment, could be held up as part of a new scientific standard for both EPA + DOE on climate — molly taft (@mollytaft.com) July 30, 2025 at 3:44 PM
x Striking stuff from @pkrugman.bsky.social, who dismantles Trump's Europe deal from top to bottom. It will actually undermine US manufacturing, the "concessions" Trump won are fake, and Trump voters will be hit hard by the tariffs. All on the pod. Don't miss this one:

x It's telling that Donald Trump's takeaway from Jeffrey Epstein hiring Virginia Giuffre away from Mar-a-Lago is to feel sorry for Donald Trump because he lost an employee, not to feel sorry for Virginia Giuffre because she was trafficked and raped.

Trump says US will set 15% tariff on South Korean imports under new deal
South Korea agrees to invest $350 billion in US projects, Trump says
South Korea to purchase $100 billion in US energy products, according to US
US sets tariffs on South Korean autos at 15%, officials said
There is far more of this meshugas that I am not going to get into today, like Europe promising to quadruple its energy imports from the US (Trump says), more than there is physical capacity to ship to them, far more than they can burn or sell elsewhere.
Fuggedaboudit.
But tomorrow is the day many of the Trump tariffs/taxes on consumers are scheduled to kick in. If he doesn’t chicken out yet again.
See Funny Music at the bottom of this GNR for my thoughts on that.
x "This is a nail in the coffin." Fmr. FBI General Counsel Andrew Weissman describes what Emil Bove's confirmation to the Third Circuit says about the United States' system of checks and balances. "The amount of proof as to why he is unfit is sort of overwhelming."

Regular Good News
The single most hopeful statistic I’ve seen in four decades of writing about the climate crisis.
~ Bill McKibben In an essay that should be required reading for anyone worried about our climate future, one of the world's most influential environmental journalists describes solar power as a 'deep re-ordering' of the world’s energy system. Globally, roughly a third more power is being generated from the sun this spring than last, and our species is now putting up a gigawatt’s worth of solar panels, roughly the same as one coal-fired plant, every 15 hours. The New Yorker
McKibben’s new book, Here Comes the Sun, goes on sale on 8/19. I have it reserved at my local library.
