Kamala: Not Running for CA Governor [1]

Following months of speculation, Kamala Harris has decided not to run for California’s governor.
From The Guardian:
“For now, my leadership – and public service – will not be in elected office,” Harris said in a statement, ending months of speculation about her political future after losing the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump. “I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans,” she added.
The Guardian continues, noting the declared Democrats wishing to replace the outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom: “The crowded field of Democrats running for governor in California is so far made up of long-serving or well-known political leaders, including Xavier Becerra, the former attorney general of California who served with Harris in Biden’s cabinet as the secretary of health and human services; Antonio Villaraigosa, the former Democratic mayor of Los Angeles; the state’s lieutenant governor, Eleni Kounalakis, who is close friends with Harris; and the former representative Katie Porter.”
A few “some guy” Republicans have said that they would run for the seat but, given the dominance of Democrats statewide, they would have a snowball’s chance of winning. Those Republicans include Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton.
While I supported Harris in her presidential run, of course, I do think that one of the other candidates would be a better choice for governor. Before there was talk of Harris running, I was leaning toward Becerra. But of course, given her immense name recognition and popularity, had Harris chosen to run, she would likely have breezed to the nomination and won the governor’s race.
