Good evening, everyone!

One day a couple of weeks or so ago, Nanny Ogg commented in the morning shade that she and her Scottish friends were planning a movie night and one of the movies being considered was A Face in the Crowd largely because it deals with a similar situation we find ourselves in now and perhaps it would work to help her explain to her friends the things happening in America today. (Could that sentence be more run-on?) Anyway, her mention of that movie made me think of the movie The Americanization of Emily. Years ago, I was gifted a DVD set containing seven movies dubbed ‘Controversial Classics’ and two of them are the two I reference here. I sent her a clip of the James Garner/Julie Andrews film and I was struck anew when watching it. First, here’s that clip:

The line that “We haven’t managed a Hitler or a Mussolini” really hit home. Can we no longer say that? Or because the felon hasn’t been able to enact the dictatorship he was hoping for, are we still able to say we haven’t managed a Hitler? I hope so.

Before we elected this lunatic, several other countries were flirting with their own fascist candidates. Canada and France were toying with the idea of ultra-right-wing leaders. I believe when America made this heinous error, it alerted the rest of the world to the hazards and quite possibly changed a whole lot of minds very quickly. I’d like to think we saved at least some devastation in other places. Now we find ourselves in the middle of a resistance. This is a fight we have to win.

I believe our resistance will keep growing so that we can kick out the republicans in the midterms and severely slow or stop this nonsense. We are already doing a great job pushing back which is leading to reversals in the courts. Our job is far from over. In fact, it is probably only going to get harder, but we need to appreciate all we have done and all the wonderful opposition from the Democrats in Congress even though they are the minority. I’m sick of people saying they aren’t fighting back. They ARE fighting back! Just because someone isn’t paying attention and doesn’t see the good being done by the Ds doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Media refuses to report what they’re doing, therefore every responsible, engaged voter needs to seek out the truth on their own and spread that truth. Uninformed voters won’t be spoon fed what is happening. We have to fix that!

Democracy Docket -- July 28, 2025

✂️Once again, this weekend, Republican elected officials took to the airwaves to lie about Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Barack Obama. Some, like Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, lie about facts that are easily proven. On Sunday, he insisted that Epstein’s plea agreement was signed under Obama, when in fact it had been inked under the presidency of George W. Bush. No matter how many times he was corrected, he refused to yield to the truth. We’ve become far too used to Republicans lying and they’ve gotten away with spreading far too many conspiracies. The question remains: once they are lied to once, why do Sunday hosts continue to book these guests? Republicans may be cowards for refusing to tell the truth, but the legacy media are fools for continuing to book them as guests. ✂️

Costs and Benefits

✂️ At the moment, Trump has lost control of events. His usual moves aren’t working. An attempt to deflect attention by accusing Barack Obama of treason did nothing to stop the flow of damaging Epstein-related claims, like the Wall Street Journal report published the next day documenting that Trump’s name is all over the Epstein materials, and that he was briefed about it months ago. His party remains divided over how to respond. Congressional leadership is running for the hills. As more details surface, Republicans will be calculating how close they want to get to someone who could at any time face documented evidence of his involvement in Epstein’s crimes. A nexus of unknowns are currently clouding their calculations. What do the files say about Trump? What details will become public? How credible will they be? How will the base react? How will the rest of the country react? Trump has successfully dominated elected Republicans by threatening to turn the wrath of his base against them, if not physically (although that is an ongoing fear), then politically in the form of primary challenges against those who stray too far from whatever he wants them to do. If the Epstein scandal splits the base, those risks may diminish in comparison to how it would look in a general election to defend Trump’s behavior—depending of course on what that behavior turns out to be. ✂️ That may not be enough to end Trump’s presidency. He may not be driven from office by the potential loss of Republican support, but he could face significant consequences should enough Republicans decide they want to move on from him because the benefits derived from defending him diminish in relation to the costs. With the 2028 election in full swing in just fifteen months, it could be an attractive off ramp for apprehensive Republicans to start looking past Trump to his successor. For Republicans on the ballot next year, this could be the best way to split the difference between a set of unknown costs and benefits—not to break with Trump entirely but to expedite the process of looking to the future. But for Trump, this would be a fate worse than resignation. It would be worse than impeachment and conviction. Because it would bring about the one thing he cannot countenance. It would make him irrelevant.

Three cheers for Democrats!!!

Compliments of Jamie Raskin:

We Democrats are the party of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. They saw fascists marching down the boulevards of Europe and did not see very fine people on both sides of the street—they knew America must stand strong on the side of democracy and freedom. We are the party of the women’s movement and the Equal Rights Amendment and comprehensive health care and freedom to make your own choices regardless of what the right-wing theocrats tell you to do. We are the party of Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act because we believe healthcare is a right of all the people and not a luxury good for the wealthy. We are the party of the labor movement and the National Labor Relations Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act. We are the party of the environmental movement and we are the party of science, facts and data—not fake news, conspiracy theory and disinformation.

Loud and proud, people! Loud and proud!

Why I Believe All of Trump's Trade Deals Will Collapse

After failing to secure trade deals with most nations by their original July 9 deadline, the Trump administration has been announcing deals (or, more accurately, preliminary frameworks) at an increased rate before its new, super serious, this-time-we-really-mean-it deadline of August 1. This past week, new agreements were announced with Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines, which added to earlier agreements with the United Kingdom and Vietnam. It is possible that more deals will be announced this weekend, as supposedly an agreement with the European Union is close. However, I have come to believe that every single one of these trade deals will eventually collapse. And, I don't mean “eventually collapse” in the Ozymandias sort of way that everything will one day collapse. I find it unlikely that even a single one of these deals will still be around one year from today. ✂️ Given that none of these deals are laws and that, as such, either party can pull out at any time, given that the only reason other countries are engaging in these negotiations is because of the threat of tariffs that could be leveled against them, and given that the tariffs which are being threatened are illegal and will be struck down by the Supreme Court in a matter of months, all of these deals seem very likely to go up in smoke in a matter of months, too. They are just a huge, destructive waste of time that will accomplish nothing for anybody, somewhat akin to Trump's pointless freezing of $7 billion in funding for public schools that he eventually released in its entirety. The Trump administration will probably even have to pay back a lot of money it collected from the tariffs while they were in place. ✂️

===

Look who’s already calling for rebates. Haulin’ Hawley is just looking to make up for voting for the ugly bill. I hope the MO voters aren’t fooled.

Who do you think you're kidding?

x If tariffs are paid by foreign countries and don't hurt American consumers, as Trump has repeatedly claimed, then why do we need rebate checks? www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...

lemay50 posted a link last night to an article that declared Democrats are thought to be more corrupt than Republicans. Seriously?? That defies logic!! This is what we’re dealing with, with the no good, very bad legacy media. We must figure out how to get the truth out to the most people!

(The part in the article that states respondents noted how the felon kept talking about taking on corruption...they fell for it!! OMG)

Trump Brazenly Using Government Resources To Put Money In His Own Pocket

Donald Trump and his White House took using government resources to put money into his pockets to a brazen new level Tuesday, treating his participation in a marketing event at one of his Scotland golf resorts as an official act worthy of promotion by taxpayer-funded staff. The convicted felon president’s “ribbon-cutting” ceremony at his golf resort was listed on the daily schedule released by the White House. When Trump gave a speech predicting it would be “a tremendously successful place,” it was carried live by the White House YouTube channel. When he began playing a round there, his staff posted video of it in real time on social media. “It’s the very definition of corruption,” said Norm Eisen, who served as the top ethics lawyer in the Obama White House. “Using his official position and government resources to benefit himself.” ✂️ The five-day trip is costing American taxpayers at least $9.7 million, not accounting for inflation, according to a HuffPost analysis, and raises Trump’s total golf-related travel and security costs to $52 million in just the first six months of his second term. His golf hobby — he insists on playing at his own courses — cost taxpayers $152 million over the four years of his first term. ✂️

And more about the corrupt Rs. Well, this may not technically be corrupt, but we can file it under NOT DOING THEIR JOBS. They are getting paid (with our taxpayer dollars) to do their jobs and if they aren’t doing them, I call that CORRUPT.

'Didn't even know': GOP lawmakers talk repeal after being shocked by Big Beautiful Bill provision

Some Republican lawmakers are starting to regret voting for President Donald Trump's megabill now that they're hearing about some of its provisions for the very first time, NBC News reported. Sahil Kapur, NBC News senior national political reporter, said one of the problematic provisions is a "tax hike on gamblers" that one professional sports better called "potentially catastrophic for the industry." The clause "would reduce the tax deduction on wagering losses from 100% to 90% starting in 2026," Kapur said in a report for Politics Now. "Long story short, gamblers could be stuck with a tax bill even if they have zero net winnings in a year." Kapur said several lawmakers who voted for the legislation now want to repeal it. ✂️

Frankly, I can think of a whole lot of other things in the ugly bill that need to be repealed before this one, but doesn’t it just gall you that they voted for something that was going to add trillions of dollars to the deficit and THEY NEVER EVEN READ IT? Fire the lot of them!

Mind blowing corruption right here:

x Bove is genuinely still on the hook for possible criminal contempt charges. Which, if the DC Circuit ever gets off its ass and does something about its "administrative" stay (since APRIL), may require him to testify under oath, despite being a judge. Unprecedented situation.

x Despite a letter signed by over 900 DOJ employees and 3 whistleblowers, the dumb ass senate just confirmed Stephen Miller Sr. to a lifetime judgeship!!! F&%$ all of you corrupt assholes!! Emil Bove 🖕🏽 — Harry Dunn (@libradunn1.bsky.social) July 29, 2025 at 10:12 PM

Most of the flutters I was finding today had the felon’s picture in them. I’ve decided I will not post that hideous image so I’m sorry to be so heavy on text this time out.

'Bad situation': Expert warns Trump in legal jeopardy with 'significant' Epstein admission

A legal expert warned President Donald Trump on Tuesday that he may have put himself in legal jeopardy by admitting he knew one of Jeffrey Epstein's victims. Trump told reporters earlier on Tuesday that Epstein "stole" Virginia Giuffre from him when she was employed at Mar-a-Lago. That claim could backfire on Trump because it shows that he knew one of the central victims in the prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell, according to Ryan Goodman, a law professor at New York University. Goodman pointed to Maxwell's 2022 sentencing, where the judge enhanced her sentence to 20 years because of Giuffre's testimony. "It's that much of a significant statement," Goodman told Erin Burnett on CNN's "OutFront." "If he had said he was aware of it from the court documents, then he's ok in that regard. But I think that's a very potentially bad situation for him to be in." ✂️

Here’s hoping. I want this story to consume him. I want it to go past the midterms and beyond. I want it to be the albatross around his neck that weighs him down and takes everyone in his orbit with him.

He is the most vile, corrupt, horrible human being. HOW DID ANYONE VOTE FOR THIS?

===

Is the WSJ correcting course? Hard to believe but here’s this:

x Shout out to the WSJ journalists who reported on Vought’s impoundment by footnote, causing the White House to walk it back. Impact journalism!!

I’ll take any about face any of them want to make. They have a ton of sins for which to repent, though.

This Politics Chat is so good. I highly recommend it and hope you can find 43 minutes to watch.

Three of the five observances today lean political. I am always astounded by the things listed on these calendars.

Some people call it a tort, some a flan, and some a custard pie. The one thing that most people agree on is that a cheesecake is not a cake! The earliest attested mention of a cheesecake is by the Greek physician Aegimus (5th century BCE), who wrote a book on the art of making cheesecakes.

===

I’ve recently read We Solve Murders by Richard Osman and two of the main characters are related this way. I enjoyed the book.

If you have a great father-in-law, by all means, wish them a happy day! And also, lucky you!

I searched for songs about fathers in law and this popped up. I’m not fluent in Spanish, but I like the music. Maybe it’s about fathers in law. 😁

===

Enacted during the height of the Revolution, it demonstrates beyond doubt that the Founding Fathers recognized the importance of whistleblowers and demanded that they be protected.

We owe a lot to whistleblowers, especially in the felon’s regime. It takes courage to stand up to people in positions of power and I applaud each and every one who does. Getting the truth out is critically important.

The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.

We were respected and admired when President Joe Biden brought our allies together to strengthen NATO. A believer in friendships and alliances, he will go down in history as one of the greatest presidents.

😎 💙 😍

A kind, honest, intelligent and humble human being. We were lucky to have him for four years.

From an article dated July 11, 2024, ten days before he was ousted from running for his second term. I will never get over it. I told you all, I am holding a grudge.

A strong NATO is crucial to U.S. and global security, President Joe Biden said today as he concluded the three-day summit marking the 75th anniversary of the alliance in Washington. The 32-member bloc stands as the "most important military defense alliance" in the history of the world, the president said as he emphasized the United States' commitment to its global partners amid renewed challenges in Europe and beyond. "For those who thought NATO's time had passed, they got a rude awakening when Putin invaded Ukraine," Biden said in a news conference capping the summit. "Some of the oldest, deepest fears in Europe roared backed to life because once again a murderous madman was on the march. "But this time, no one cowered in appeasement, especially the United States," he said. ✂️

===

This could be the thing that brings down the felon and I hope it is. Who is scummier and deserves this more? I’d much rather he be associated with the grossest thing he has done instead of like Al Capone who was brought down by tax evasion. I want the pervert to be forever known as a sexual predator.
