NASA recently published this nice colorful collection of images of all 30 rock and regolith samples (plus 3 witness tubes) collected by the Perseverance Mars rover so far, since it landed on Mars on February 18, 2021. www.jpl.nasa.gov/...

The image contains -

27 rock cores

2 samples of regolith (broken Mars rock and dust)

1 atmospheric sample

3 witness tube interiors

At this point, there are 8 empty sample tubes + 2 witness tubes remaining.

Ten of the samples – including one atmospheric sample and one witness tube – were deposited in January 2023 on the ground at a location dubbed "Three Forks" within Jezero Crater. The other 23 samples collected thus far remain aboard the rover.

Each sample was carefully selected based on its location and properties as analyzed by various instruments aboard the rover and each sample has a story to tell.

But the future of these samples remains uncertain. The plan was to bring them back to earth for analysis and to detect signs of ancient life on Mars using the Mars Sample Return Mission. That mission is not funded under the current budget.

Now let’s solve today’s puzzle composed in 1930 by Comins Mansfield (1896 – 1984), noted English composer of Two Move Chess problems.
