There was an 8.8 (some say 8.7) earthquake off Kamchatka peninsula around 4:25 PM Pacific time. Tsunami warnings have been issued for the entire west coast of the US.

Tsunami watch issued for California coast after powerful quake hits near Russia

The National Tsunami Warning Center, based in Alaska, issued a tsunami warning for parts of the Alaska Aleutian Islands, and a watch for the West Coast, including California, Oregon and Washington. The advisory also includes a vast swath of Alaska’s coast line, including parts of the panhandle. The National Weather Service's Bay Area office said the estimated time of arrival in California is approximately 12:15 a.m. in Monterey, 12:40 a.m. in San Francisco and 1:05 a.m. at Los Angeles harbor. "Flooding of coastal regions is possible," although meteorologists are still "currently evaluating the threat," the NWS said in its alert. They're asking residents near the coast to "stay alert for further updates." Updates can be found on the National Tsunami Warning Center's site, and tsunami maps can be found via the California Department of Conservation.

DO NOT GO TO THE SHORE TO WATCH IT. A tsunami moves faster than you can run.

Because the earthquake was on the far side of the Pacific Ocean, the US has 5-10 hours advance warning. If you are in a tsunami evacuation zone, stay alert for any local reports for the rest of this evening.

Japan and Hawai’i are already ordering evacuations: Powerful quake in Russia's Far East causes tsunami, Japan and Hawaii order evacuations

A magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, generating a tsunami of up to 4 metres (13 feet), damaging buildings and prompting evacuation warnings in the area and across most of Japan's east coast, officials said. "Today's earthquake was serious and the strongest in decades of tremors," Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said in a video posted on the Telegram messaging app, adding that a kindergarten was damaged. . . . The Japan Weather Agency upgraded its warning, saying it expected tsunami waves of up to 3 metres (10 feet) to reach large coastal areas starting around 0100 GMT. Broadcast NHK said evacuation orders had been issued by the government for some areas. . . Hawaii ordered evacuations from some coastal areas. "Take Action! Destructive tsunami waves expected," the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management said on X.

Yes, Canada is also at risk; sorry about that. In fact, the west coast of Canada has just upgraded from a watch to an advisory: Tsunami watch upgraded to advisory for much of B.C. coast after major earthquake near Russia

A tsunami advisory has been issued for multiple parts of the B.C. coast after a large earthquake in the Pacific basin near Kamchatka, Russia, on Tuesday afternoon. . . . A tsunami advisory, upgraded from an earlier tsunami watch, has been issued for B.C.'s north and central coasts including Kitimat and Bella Coola, Haida Gwaii and the west and northeast coasts of Vancouver Island. It also spans the Juan de Fuca Strait from Jordan River to Greater Victoria, including the Saanich Peninsula.

The San Francisco Bay Area has also been upgraded to an advisory: What to know about Tsunami Advisory in effect for Bay Area coastline after Russia earthquake (as of 7:18 PM):

The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a Tsunami Advisory for the California Coast on Tuesday evening, including coastal areas spanning from Mendocino to Monterey counties. Previously, the center had issued a Tsunami Watch, which was issued around 5:54 p.m. An advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or dangerous waves is expected or already occurring.

-----------------------— Update 8:10 PM PDT ------------------------—

The entire state of Hawai’i is now at the highest alert level, tsunami warning. The governor of Hawai’i has signed an emergency proclamation. Gov. Newsom of California has been briefed and his team is coordinating with local officials. Huntington Beach pier has just been closed, but no evacuations ordered. Yet. There is a report that a tsunami wave has struck in the Kuril Islands.

NOTE: The 2011 tsunami that struck Japan and caused the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster was 50 feet high and went inland for miles.

AND ANOTHER NOTE: The first wave of a tsunami is not necessarily the worst one. If you have evacuated, DO NOT RETURN until authorities give the all-clear.

Trump did issue a statement about the tsunami about an hour ago:

"Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii," Trump wrote. "A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way. Please visit tsunami.gov/ for the latest information. STAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!"

Sorry, Canada. He didn’t mention you.
