So this past weekend, I participated in my first bridge tournament since I went to Las Vegas in the summer of 2019. My friend, who used to partner with me reasonably often until he moved away from our hometown and then got married and had children, joined me in Philly for the weekend. We played in two low level games: one on Friday and one on Sunday, along with the 2 session Gold Rush Pairs on Saturday. Considering he had not played nearly any bridge in the last roughly a decade, we played pretty well. In each of the events we played, we finished in the top 5 of our section and a couple of times finishing in the top 5 of the overall game. In fact, we were only about 8 points away from finishing first in our section for the second round of the Gold Rush Pairs. Had we finished there, we would have scored some gold points. Alas, we had to settle for red points for the whole weekend but did come away with approximately 3 red points. Not bad considering how many less people are playing in the lower level games than were back in 2019. (Point awards are based on the number of tables in a game.)
During the lunch break on Saturday, we headed across the street from the hotel to Reading Terminal Market to have a cheesesteak. I could only eat half of mine. Across from the cheesesteak place was Nina’s who sells varieties of banana pudding (apparently, they have been featured on GMA). I really wanted one but passed. It will be one of many reasons why I will be returning to Philadelphia sometime soon.
Next week, I will be heading to the other side of Pennsylvania for the annual Booster Club Convention. I may or may not write on Tuesday, so be aware there could be a gap next week. Also, for those attending NN, have a great time. I will get there one day. Stay cool everyone!
