The Daily Bucket - mixed use dock in July: otters, dogs, etc [1]

July 2025

Salish Sea, Pacific Northwest

It’s high summer at the dock, which means lots of use by many. For humans it’s access to boats and associated maintenance. For wildlife it’s a handy surface to hang out….but only when humans aren’t around. My trailcam picks up motion of whatever source, with humans dominating in the daytime and wildlife dusk/night/dawn.

During July I haven’t seen any seals on the dock. Probably pupping season keeps them at more easily accessible haulouts. Young otters are the most frequent visitors, the current gang of youngsters. Occasionally gulls, crows, pigeons and a heron stop by.

Human activity on the dinghy dock includes people (up to knee height) and their dogs.

A few trailcam stills:

Dawn: otter

Afternoon: dog and person

Just before morning: otter gang

In the 1¾ minute video below, a chronological selection of clips from the trailcam this month starts with someone at the work party scrubbing otter poop off the dock, with otters then returning at their earliest convenience. Also various dogs, and once I caught Mr O while he was repainting the ramp railing. Plus more otters romping. Yesterday I was out at the dock and there was more otter poop. Didn’t stop to upload the trailcam sd card with the last few days of clips but I can guess who is on that footage!

🦦

Sunny and pleasantly mild today in the PNW islands, temps in the low 70s. Sunny and calm.

What’s up in nature in your neighborhood?
