Americans has some expertise in genocide, having committed one against the indigenous people we found here in the settler-colonial project we undertook on this continent.
But to salve our guilt, we now misunderstand the mechanics of how it operates.
We have convinced ourselves that every culture is always on the brink of committing a genocide — that every nation wants lusts for genocide just as we did when this whole continent was the reward for it.
In truth, humans recoil from it, just like we recoil from killing single human beings. The intense training we must do with soldiers to make them unthinking killing machines is analogous here.
A nation establishes itself to commit a genocide, and works itself up to it, and then tries to see if it can go through with it.
That’s what we did. And we “succeeded,” mostly, God help us.
If you read Jabotinsky and the history of Zionism, and look at Zionist propaganda from around the time of Israel’s creation, you understand that’s what Israel is doing too.
All that remains is to see if they can convince themselves to go through with it, and if anyone else can stop them.
