Welcome back friends to the Monday Good News Roundup, that magic time of the week when the GNR newsroom (Myself, Killer300, Bhu, and the GNR Discord) get all the stories to help start your week off right. I don’t have much to add this week so lets jump right in.

But first, its been a rough week for music lovers, we lost two giants of the music industry, and so for this weeks music offering we will be paying tribute to both of them. First, a man who needs no introduction: The Man, the Myth, The Prince of fucking darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, with Get me Through

Rest in peace Ozzy. Now onto the stories.

Parametric insurance programs are being introduced and gaining ground in India, offering financial protection for climate-linked losses — ranging from income lost by daily wage workers during heatwaves to reduced earnings from farmers because of heat-stressed livestock (which produce less milk and are less fertile and more disease prone) and damage to crops caused by excessive rainfall.

Sounds like a good idea, We definitely need something like this over in the states. Everywhere really.

In a sunny room in Fullerton, California, something magical is happening this summer: a group of high school girls is spending four weeks learning some new skills—not from YouTube, but from real grandmas. Every Tuesday and Thursday in July, the Golden Connections Club, a student-led group from nearby Garden Grove, gathers at Olive Community Services for a one-of-a-kind intergenerational summer camp. The concept is simple: seniors teach kids practical skills that once filled every household; sewing, ironing, cooking, embroidery, and more.

Sometimes you get a story that just makes you go “dawwww”.

Some of Stephen Colbert's late-night colleagues joined him in the audience of "The Late Show" on Monday after he announced last week that CBS will be canceling the show in 2026. Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and more had cameos in the audience of "The Late Show" on July 21 — the first episode since Colbert revealed his show was being canceled — as he addressed the fallout from the announcement from CBS and its parent company, Paramount Global.

Glad to see so many entertainers showing solidarity with Colbert after his firing.

For dozens of sexual assault victims, the agonizing wait to process DNA evidence in their cases may soon be over, thanks to an anonymous stranger.

A GoFundMe seeking to raise millions of dollars to clear Colorado's massive backlog of untested rape kits received a $52,500 donation from an unnamed individual earlier this month — more than quintupling the total raised since the fundraiser began in March.

Sexual assault victims in Colorado wait 570 days on average for the state to process their evidence kits, according to the state Bureau of Investigation. During that wait, victims are often unable to pursue criminal charges, restraining orders or any semblance of justice. As of June 30, there are 1,236 cases awaiting testing, including 398 cases that have been stuck in the backlog since before July of 2024.

Not all heroes wear capes, as is evident here.

After months of wavering support and signs of growing disillusionment, new polling suggests Gen Z voters are beginning to drift back toward the Democratic Party. The latest Pew Research data shows that 49 percent of Gen Z voters lean toward the Democrats, while 43 percent lean toward the Republicans. That marks a shift from 2024 when more Gen Z voters leaned toward the Republicans than the Democrats for the first time ever, with 47 percent backing Republicans and just 46 percent identifying as Democrats.

You know, I don’t blame Gen Z for being had by the GOP, it seems like slagging off the Democrats is a national pastime for some people, but now they got a taste of what the other side is all about and I imagine they don’t much care for it.

So I think this is the big news for this week: South Park took a swipe at Trump, and he haaaates it. Personally have not been a fan of South Park for the longest time, but they are using their platform to actually speak truth to power for once so good for them.

There is no doubt that the American public is pissed off about Donald Trump’s cover-up around the Epstein files—and his most loyal Republican minions are feeling the wrath. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was called a “pedophile” by a heckler during a press conference in Manatee County on Thursday. DeSantis was talking about the death of professional wrestler Hulk Hogan when a man stood up and shouted “Alligator Alcatraz, that’s your fucking legacy.” The protester was referring to the human rights disaster masquerading as a state-run immigration detention center that DeSantis eagerly built and funded at Trump’s request.

Yeah, the Epstein thing continues to not go away and is now funneling down to Florida Governor and Presidential No Hoper Ron DeSantis. I’d feel sorry for him except he’s an absolute monster and deserves all the shit he gets and more.

Lara Trump won’t be running for Senate in North Carolina after all. The former RNC co- chair, whose political experience sticks close to President Donald Trump’s campaigns, made the announcement Thursday morning via X. “After much consideration and heartfelt discussions with my family, friends, and supporters, I have decided not to pursue the United States Senate seat in North Carolina at this time,” she wrote. “I am deeply grateful for the encouragement and support I have received from the people of my home state whom I love so much. While I am not running in this election, my passion for Making America Great Again burns brightly, and I look forward to the future, wherever that leads.”

Oh thank goodness, last thing we need is more Trumps in politics.

On Tuesday (23 July), Chappell Roan shared her first teaser for her single “The Subway”. In the short clip the “Pink Pony Club” singer sings, “I made a promise if in four months this feeling ain’t gone I’ll f**k this city / I’m moving to Saskatchewan.” Chappell Roan has now released dates for her “Visions of Damsels and Other Dangerous Things” US pop-up concerts. The “Red Wine Supernova” singer will kick off her tour with four dates at Forest Hills Stadiums in Forest Hills, New York, from 20 to 24 September, before heading to Kansas City’s Museum and Memorial Park on 3 and 4 October. She will end her tour in Brookside, California at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on 10 and 11 October.

Not all heroes wear capes, but some definitely sing pop songs.

Last week, Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour talked about the role of women in the video games industry. It featured interviews with gaming insiders, from esports presenter Frankie Ward to members of the inclusive online community Black Girl Gamers. It was wonderful to hear so many disparate, expert views on games culture being given so much time on the show. One of my favourite moments was when presenter Nuala McGovern read out some listener responses to the question: why do you play video games? “I don’t think there’s enough recognition of gaming as an activity for couples,” one replied. “My husband and I bonded over our shared love of gaming. Our honeymoon was playing Borderlands 2 while we saved for a flat deposit, and now, with a young child, we explore stories, we visit new worlds, we solve mysteries … There is an underappreciated romance to gaming – we communicate, encourage, collaborate and celebrate together. It’s a joy.”

This is really sweet, I love video games and I love romance (even though its something I will never experience myself being Aroace), so seeing them together warms my heart.

Speaking of, the other musician who passed on this week: Chuck Manigone. Here he is with Feels so Good. Rest in Peace sir.

Yesterday I wrote about the Four Ds when it comes to the White House’s strategy and response to the Epstein matter: Deny, Delay, Deceive and Distract. Today, I want to drill down on the first D because Trump’s efforts to deny his involvement with Epstein are quickly falling apart. To Trump’s dismay, Epstein remains the top story in the news again. And it’s in part because Trump’s attempts to deny and cover up the story are so clumsy. We know from Watergate (and Barbra Streisand) that the one thing the public cannot resist is a cover-up. It creates intrigue, raises speculation, spawns conspiracies, and draws ever more eyeballs and clicks, as everyone from the press to pundits to amateur internet sleuths weighs in on what the denier might be hiding.

Like I said, the Epstein thing is not going away, I really hope this lasts.

On Wednesday (23 July), Romero was tearfully reunited with his parents in Capacho Nuevo, Venezuela. Melissa Shepard, the director of legal services at the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, said: “His entire town was waiting for him, preparing a meal.” Photos of Romero with his mother and father show him wearing a crown, his arms wrapped around them both, as he kisses his father on the forehead. Another shot captures people clapping as he looks down at flowers and a cake decorated in the colours of the Venezuelan flag. A video on X shows a teary Romero hugging members of his community, who crowd around him to welcome him back.

Really glad this guy made it home.

An Idaho judge sentenced Bryan Kohberger on Wednesday to multiple terms of life in prison for the stabbing murders of four University of Idaho students, weeks after Kohberger agreed to a plea deal that rules out the death penalty. "I remand the defendant to the custody of the Idaho State Board of Corrections for him to be imprisoned in an appropriate facility ... where he will remain until he dies," District Judge Steven Hippler said. For the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Ethan Chapin, 20, the judge ordered Kohberger, 30, to serve a term of life in prison without parole, to be serve consecutively, for each killing. He also imposed a $50,000 fine and a civil penalty of $5,000 for each death.

Nice to see justice done.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s order seeking to end birthright citizenship is unconstitutional, affirming a lower-court decision that blocked its enforcement nationwide. The ruling from a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes after Trump’s plan was also blocked by a federal judge in New Hampshire. It marks the first time an appeals court has weighed in and brings the issue one step closer to coming back quickly before the Supreme Court.

Once again, Trump sticks his little baby hands into the cookie jar and gets them smacked by the courts.

This was a very video heavy article this week, I apologize for that. Then again it makes my job easier, and also here’s another video: Pokemon time!

And now for the GNR Lightning round

UnitedHealth under federal investigation

Nexamp found a faster way to build solar

Beijing’s south China sea campaign of intimidation has run aground

Transit leaders look to efficient tech driven future

Vietnam banning gasoline motorcycles

And now, the cute corner

And now for the resistance spotlight, and I know we haven’t had one in a while, but this week I have a big ask for everyone in the GNR space.

If you don’t know, recently the gaming store Itch.io has been pressured by credit card companies and an evangelical Terf group from Australia to ban adult content from their platforms. This is a gross bit of censorship and endemic of a situation of credit card companies slowly scouring adult content from the internet. This is people’s livelihoods at stake. I’m no good on the phone so I have not called, but I can still spread the rallying cry.

So please consider calling and helping to make a difference. Thank you.

Anyway, that’s it for this week, everyone have a good one.
