Street Prophets Sunday Coffee Hour: Writing Villains [1]

Welcome to Street Prophets Sunday Coffee Hour. This is an open thread so grab something to drink and sit a spell and let us know what is new with you. I have been writing my Steampunk novel for a while now. Currently I am writing a new character who happens to be a villain.

One nice thing about villains is that they can be very interesting. I was wondering about the idea of being born evil. Psychologists say that a person can't be born evil. They can be predisposed to acting evil.

My new character is evil and I am currently trying to explain how he got that way. What would make a person do evil? What I find interesting is that the person does not believe they are doing evil. They can justify their actions so that in their mind they are not doing evil but acting in a perfectly reasonable manner. It is an interesting mind set.

I am having a fun time in inventing a background that lets my character act the way he does. In his mind he is acting in a perfectly reasonable manner. How does a person exist without a moral compass?

It should be interesting.
