Protecting the Institution [1]

I’ll get right to the crux of my diary. It needs to come with a trigger warning. When a person indicated that he wanted to join us (my church), he was contrite, begged forgiveness, and admitted he was an alcoholic in recovery. It was difficult to not be taken in by his seeming sincerity and poise. He was a very good actor reduced to rubble following a high powered job. But it’s more than that.

In recent times, it’s been discovered that our prospective member molested a fourteen year old girl, while in a position of authority over her. This does not sit well with me. I don’t want to sound like an old crank, but I think children should be protected. Regardless of how sorry the offender is, I am always going to be suspicious of his motives from here on out. I don’t want to be suspicious, but in this day and age, I can’t help but go into that mode of thought sometimes.

Most of this diary is about me. My church thinks I’m being too harsh on the prospective member. To them, I should be turning the other cheek. Should I extend forgiveness? When is punishment needed and when is restraint a better option?
