Thailand and Cambodia to hold peace talks as Trump urges them to settle differences
Donald Trump has said he believed both Thailand and Cambodia wanted to settle their differences after he told the leaders of both countries that he would not conclude trade deals with them unless they ended their fighting. On Monday, Thai and Cambodian leaders will meet in Malaysia for talks to end hostilities, a spokesperson for the Thai prime minister’s office said on Sunday. The deadly border dispute, now in its fourth day, has killed at least 35 people and displaced more than 218,000. Trump told reporters in Turnbery, Scotland: “I spoke to both of the prime ministers, and I think by the time I got off, I think they want to settle now.” A spokesperson for Thailand’s acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, said the leader would attend Monday’s talks in response to an invitation from Malaysian prime minister Anwar Ibrahim “to discuss peace efforts in the region”. Anwar has been acting in his capacity as this year’s chair of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

Thousands in Greece and Turkey evacuate as winds and heat fan wildfires
Thousands of people in Greece and Turkey have been forced to evacuate homes as firefighters in the countries battled to contain wildfires fanned by strong winds and searing heat. As temperatures in south-eastern Europe exceeded 40C for a seventh straight day, the Greek prime minister praised rescue workers for waging “a titanic battle” to bring blazes under control. “The state mechanism has been called to engage in a titanic battle, simultaneously responding to dozens of wildfires across the country,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a statement. “To those who saw their properties destroyed by the fury of fire, know that the state will stand by your side.” Eleven regions of Greece face a “very high risk” of fire, and the government has appealed for help from EU partners to help it deal with fires burning on multiple fronts.

US and EU avert trade war with 15% tariff deal
Deal includes $600 bln EU investments in US, more EU energy, defence purchases
15% tariff better than threatened 30%, in deal mirroring Japan's
EU says rate extends to cars, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors
US steel and aluminium tariffs stay at 50%, but could fall later TURNBERRY, Scotland, July 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. struck a framework trade agreement with the European Union on Sunday, imposing a 15% import tariff on most EU goods - half the threatened rate - and averting a bigger trade war between the two allies that account for almost a third of global trade. U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the deal at Trump's luxury golf course in western Scotland after an hour-long meeting that pushed the hard-fought deal over the line, following months of negotiations. "I think this is the biggest deal ever made," Trump told reporters, lauding EU plans to invest some $600 billion in the United States and dramatically increase its purchases of U.S. energy and military equipment. Trump said the deal, which tops a $550 billion deal signed with Japan last week, would expand ties between the trans-Atlantic powers after years of what he called unfair treatment of U.S. exporters.

Stocks rise, euro firms after US-EU trade agreement
SINGAPORE, July 28 (Reuters) - Global stocks rose and the euro firmed on Monday after a trade agreement between the United States and the EU lifted sentiment and provided some clarity in a week of key policy meetings by the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. The U.S. struck a framework trade agreement with the European Union, imposing a 15% import tariff on most EU goods - half the threatened rate, a week after agreeing to a trade deal with Japan that lowered proposed tariffs on auto imports. Countries are scrambling to finalise trade deals ahead of an August 1 deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump, with talks between the U.S. and China set for Monday in Stockholm amid expectations of another 90-day extension to the truce between the world's top two economies.

Ukrainian drones target St Petersburg as Putin attends scaled-down Navy Day
MOSCOW, July 27 (Reuters) - Ukrainian drones targeted St. Petersburg on Sunday, Russian authorities said, forcing the airport to close for five hours as Vladimir Putin marked Russia's Navy Day in the city, despite the earlier cancellation of its naval parade due to security concerns. St. Petersburg usually holds a large-scale, televised navy parade on Navy Day, which features a flotilla of warships and military vessels sailing down the Neva River and is attended by Putin. Last year, Russia suspected a Ukrainian plan to attack the city's parade, according to state television. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Sunday that this year's parade had been cancelled for security reasons, following first reports of its cancellation in early July. Putin arrived at the city's historic naval headquarters on Sunday by patrol speed boat, from where he followed drills involving more than 150 vessels and 15,000 military personnel in the Pacific and Arctic Oceans and Baltic and Caspian Seas. "Today we are marking this holiday in a working setting, we are inspecting the combat readiness of the fleet," Putin said in a video address.

At least 38 killed in church attack in eastern DR Congo
At least 38 people have been killed and 15 others injured in an attack on a church in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The attack, carried out by suspected members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) wielding guns and machetes, took place at the church in Ituri province’s Komanda city early on Sunday. The ADF, with ties to ISIL (ISIS), is a rebel group that operates in the borderland between Uganda and the DRC, and has routinely conducted attacks against civilian populations. Several houses and shops were also burned down, and many people remain missing after the attack, which happened while Catholic Christians were attending a prayer vigil at the church, run by the Caritas charity.

Delta Air Lines pilot arrested after flight: Reports
A pilot on a Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis to San Francisco was arrested by federal agents after landing, according to reports. Travel outlet View from the Wing reported that officers "stormed to the front" of flight 2809 following its arrival at San Francisco International Airport on July 26. The plane landed at approximately 9:35 p.m. following a delay for heavy fog, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Neither outlet named the pilot. A passenger on the flight told the Chronicle that she witnessed at least 10 law enforcement officers, including agents from Homeland Security Investigations and people identifying as air marshals, involved in the arrest and that a second team of agents retrieved the pilot's belongings. Footage following the arrest published by View from the Wing shows some of the alleged officers wearing plainclothes and badges. It is unclear from the footage if the officers were masked. Delta Air Lines declined to comment, referring USA TODAY to law enforcement.

Germany updates: Train derails, killing at least 3 people
At least three people died in the train accident near Riedlingen in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg. Some 100 passengers were on the train when at least two carriages partially derailed. Around 50 are injured, a number of them seriously, according to the district fire chief. The cause of the derailment is still unclear, but the region was hit by a storm earlier in the evening. DW's Michael Watzke, who reported from the scene early on Monday morning, said that the remaining passengers had been brought to a community center in a nearby village. He said that the crash site was still a hive of activity. Videos show hundreds of people, including firefighters, police, train workers and even the army helping at the scene of the accident as generators hum in the background.
