New Day Cafe: Cat Shrine [1]

Good morning, Newdists! Yesterday, I met up with one of my best friends from grad school since she was in town this weekend. She told me a while back that she’d gotten into the practice of putting together puzzles for people and framing them as gifts. She did tell me that she’d been working on a puzzle for me, but I’d forgotten about it until she revealed the finished product last night! She kept trying to lower my expectations and tell me that it was fine if I didn’t like it, but how is this puzzle anything but purrfect for me?

What my friend didn’t know is that I’ve been seeking out quirky cat decorations for quite a while now to keep Autumn company on our mantel. When Autumn passed away, it only seemed right to put her ashes on the mantel, but then I realized how barren the mantel looked with just the box of ashes up there. So I’ve been building a kind of cat shrine up there as an ongoing project. Whenever I find cute and quirky cat decorations (especially if the cats depicted are either orange or calico), I buy them to add to the mantel. I wanted Autumn’s resting place to be fun and playful—and a bit weird—just as she was in life. And the cat puzzle makes for a great centerpiece!

I think I do want to eventually hang the puzzle above the mantel, but I didn’t want to deal with that right now, so it’s just going to be like this for a while.

Autumn’s ashes are on the left side, along with her paw print. I found that drawing of a calico cat holding a king cake somewhere in the New Orleans French Quarter and HAD to get it. Those little wooden cat figurines are from the TikTok shop.

The little cat figurines right next to the puzzle are from a vendor at the big street market in the NOLA French Quarter. The BF found those cat cups in the middle at a store somewhere in Houston. I can’t remember where I got the calico cat on the end, but I’m sure I got it because it was calico!

Eventually—hopefully a long time from now—I want to put Zoe’s ashes up here, too. But I’ll space them apart, probably on opposite sides, since they had a love/hate relationship in life.

That’s it! That’s the cat shrine as it currently stands. I’m open to any suggestions (it’s a work in progress).

New Day Cafe is an open thread!
