Ever since Ronald Reagan declared that government is not the solution, government is the problem, Republican ideologues have sought to weaken government. Like Grover Norquist who said he would like to see government shrunk until it would fit in a bathtub. Or Project 2025. Or Elon Musk’s so-called “Department of Government Efficiency”.

A private sector that produces high quality goods at an affordable price along with safe well paid employees is the type of strong private sector we need. GOP ideologues will spout total nonsense to the effect that the “invisible hand” of competition between companies will produce these desirable outcomes without government interference.

But look at the disgusting food industry. It sells far too many products that taste great but make huge numbers of people unhealthy. This is a case of insufficient regulation driven by unethical producers and armies of lobbyists.

On the other hand, look at our automotive industry, where government regulations limit air pollution, though right now Donald Trump is trying to dilute these regulations.

Look also at our air transport industry, where government agencies and the government legal system has constantly forced the industry toward greater safety.

Strong government can prevent the sale of shoddy products endangering consumers and unsafe work environments. .

A central problem of industrial capitalism is that without sufficient regulation, the bad guys often win. Strong government is needed to prevent this from happening.
