Caturday Pootie Diary: You smell [1]

I sat with a sigh, leaning my head back so I’d be close to Freddie who was perched on the back of the couch. I took a big swig of water, feeling a little dehydrated.
Freddie leaned forward and sniffed my brow. He stilled, as if processing what he had smelled, then leaned in closer and with his nose almost pressed to my skin, made a more thorough examination. The tiny muscles of his nostrils fluttered against my hairline, tickling.
I leaned away. “Stop,” I said. “I just worked out and I’m all sweaty and stinky.
His mouth was open a little as he rolled my scent through all his senses.
“Gross,” I said.
A gentle reminder of how we do things: 🐱🐶🐦 Do not troll the diary. If you hate pootie diaries, leave now. No harm, no foul.
Please do share pics of your fur kids! If you have health/behavior issues with your pets, feel free to bring it to the community.
Pooties are cats; Woozles are dogs. Birds... are birds! Peeps are people.
Whatever happens in the outer blog STAYS in the outer blog. If you’re having “issues” with another Kossack, keep it “out there.” This is a place to relax and play; please treat it accordingly. There are some pics we never post: snakes, creepy crawlies, any and all photos that depict or encourage human cruelty toward animals. These are considered “out of bounds” and will not be tolerated. If we alert you to it, please remember that we do have phobic peeps who react strongly to them. If you keep posting banned pics...well then...the Tigress will have to take matters in hand. Or, paw.
He jumped down next to me and immediately began to carefully sniff my arm. “It doesn’t smell the same?” I asked.
“It does,” he murmured.
“Then why do this? You know how I smell right now.”
“Need to make sure,” he said, sitting back and closing his eyes.
“What do I smell like?” I wondered.
“Like you, but more.”
"Stinky, though,” I said, lifting an arm to smell myself while Freddie watched. He was extremely interested in everything I was doing.
“No, like you. Like you are naturally.”
I frowned at him. “I am not naturally stinky,” I huffed.
“You smell good. Like my friend,” he insisted.
I melted a little. “You are so sweet,” I said, rubbing his head.
He shook me off and squinted up at me. “Do you think I’m stinky?” he demanded.
“Yes,” I said.
He recoiled, gasping dramatically.
“Mostly just after you eat. Your food does not smell good and that smell lingers around you until you’ve groomed.”
“My food smells really good!” he disagreed. “Like chicken! And tuna! And beef!”
“Okay,” I said, not really wanting to argue. “I’m very glad it smells good to you. You’re the one it’s made for!”
“And I have a much better sense of smell than you do,” he pointed out. “So you really should just take my word for it.”
I nodded solemnly. “You’re right.”
“Of course! My sense of smell is unmatched!”
"I need to go upstairs,” I announced, not moving.
Freddie was very busy running his nose along the inside of my arm. Otherwise, he ignored me.
“I need to shower and start my day,” I told the back of his bent head. My limbs were heavy and I was sleepy. The last thing I wanted to do was start my day.
Freddie started licking my arm.
I pulled it away. “What are you doing?” I asked, laughing.
“Salty,” he said.
“Gross,” I said, getting up.
I started the water in the shower and walked away into my bedroom, letting it warm up. Sitting on the bed with a tired sigh, I watched as Freddie entered my room and jumped up to join me.
He wasn’t done inspecting me, it seemed.
Before he could reach me, I leaned forward and grabbed him, picking him up and holding him to my chest. I kissed the side of his face loudly, “Muah! Muah! Muah!”
He wiggled. “Unhand me!”
“Nope! Muah! Muah! Muah!”
“Human!” he protested, wiggling harder.
I folded my lips over my teeth and pretended to eat him. “Arg arg arg arg!”
He started to rabbit kick, so I reluctantly set him down.
Freddie shook himself, his fur standing up in odd directions thanks to my assault on his dignity. He curled around himself and began rapidly grooming.
“Speaking of which,” I said. “My shower water is running!” I got up and walked to the bathroom.
Ten minutes later, I reentered my bedroom wrapped in a towel, shower steam drifting in behind me.
Freddie was still on my bed, curled up and quietly watching me.
I plopped down next to him, the mattress bouncing with my weight. He grabbed on and rode it out.
Staring off into the distance, I tried to work up the will to get dressed. All I wanted to do was lie down and close my eyes. “That was a hard workout,” I said, looking down at Freddie.
He was smelling my arm again, this time looking much less pleased. “What did you do?” he demanded.
“Took a shower and washed myself,” I said. “I might have smelled good to a cat, but other humans would have found it rather offensive.”
He snorted. “Who cares what they think?” he said.
“I mean. I do, at least a little.”
He rolled his eyes.
Freddie was rubbing is head and his whole body against mine. He was being very deliberate and mildly aggressive.
“Aww,” I said, “I love you too!”
“Hold still,” he said, pushing his head into my bicep and rubbing his cheek on my skin.
“Wait, this is some kind of judgment on how I smell, isn’t it?”
“Hold still!” he said, again. “I’m trying to fix it!”
Happy Caturday, Peeps! Freddie does lead with his nose whenever we’re together!
