What IS in the Epstein files? UPDATED [1]

Given that reports suggest there are gigabytes of data in the Epstein files, it’s likely no single person has a grasp of it all.

That being said, Barry Levine has been writing about Epstein for years, and he’s come up with a set of questions that would be a good start on getting that big picture. (Full access gift link to The NY Times.) Here’s the questions:

No. 1: How did Mr. Epstein make his money, and how did he finance his sex trafficking over two decades?

No. 2: Did Mr. Epstein have any ties to spy agencies?

No. 3: Are there references to Mr. Trump in the files that add to our knowledge of his relationship with Mr. Epstein?

No. 4: What about Bill Clinton?

No. 5: Who were the clients implicated in Mr. Epstein’s sex trafficking operation?

No. 6: Who helped Mr. Epstein overseas?

No. 7: What did investigators find in Mr. Epstein’s safe, computers and other property?

No. 8: What do the videos show?

No. 9: What is in Mr. Epstein’s autopsy report?

Each question has a summary of what they are about, explaining why they need to be answered. Levine has the background to raise them; he’s been covering Epstein for decades.

Barry Levine is the author of “The Spider: Inside the Criminal Web of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell” and an author, with Monique El-Faizy, of “All the President’s Women: Donald Trump and the Making of a Predator.”

Several things struck me while reading through this. There are a fair number people who knew Epstein, including some with long-running business connections, who claim they had no idea he was trafficking under age girls for sex. (Not that trafficking women of legal age would be all that great either.)

It’s also interesting how many people who would know are now dead, not just Epstein.

Levine notes that releasing the files would require redacting some material to protect the innocent and protect potential further investigations. The files are now in the hands of people who absolutely cannot be trusted to do so honestly.

Preparing the files for redaction would require an army of people to review the files and coordinate those efforts. How would those people A) be protected from “knowing too much”, B) be prevented from using the material for personal advantage ie: blackmail and/or political sabotage, and C) what could be an overwhelming need to leak material from sheer outrage? It would practically require setting up a dedicated facility — and finding people of unquestionable credibility and integrity.

If there’s another mystery, it’s why Democratic Party leadership seems reluctant to seize on this. Are they afraid of what might come out? Are they reluctant to interrupt the MAGA movement from its own civil war? Piss off their big donors who might be implicated?

Anyone who lived through the Great Clinton Penis Hunt, “Her emails”, and “Benghazi Benghazi Benghazi” knows Republicans never let a Democratic scandal go to waste, even if they have to create it themselves.

One more thing. Epstein may be gone, but what his story has dragged into the light is that he was someone who recognized a demand for the services he provided and worked to supply it. There are still plenty of private jets, private islands — and it’s hard to believe a desire for fresh ocean breezes is the main reason there are so many mega-yachts.

There is no reason to believe that demand has disappeared with Epstein. Rich and powerful people are a law unto themselves. They’ve bought the U.S. government after all.

And there is no reason to think the corruption is only about sex.

UPDATE: Speaking of body counts, Dean Blundell has compiled a list of people connected to Trump and Epstein whose deaths begin to look convenient at best, and troubling at worst. Considering the conspiracy theories around the suicide of Vincent Foster, you’d think Blundell’s list would spark a little interest.

If there is anything living in Trump world should have taught us, it’s that none of these people should be given the benefit of the doubt, and nothing is too crazy to consider. Ask Stormy Daniels about that.
