The president of France posted on Twitter today that his country will finally recognize the State of Palestine in September at the annual UN General Assembly open session meeting, which is usually the third Tuesday.
“In keeping with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognise the State of Palestine,” Macron wrote. “I will solemnly announce this at the United Nations General Assembly in September this year,” he added. The move makes France the largest and arguably most influential country in Europe to move to recognise a Palestinian state, after European Union members Norway, Ireland and Spain indicated they would also begin the same process.
France’s formal recognition could also encourage other EU states to follow suit, reaching a total of over150 countries recognizing a Palestinian state by the end of the year, as there are just a handful of EU countries totally not onboard with statehood.
At least 142 countries out of the 193 members of the UN currently recognise or plan to recognise a Palestinian state, but several powerful Western countries have refused to do so. They include the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany.
France could also be announcing this diplomatic move to pressure Israel and Hamas into a ceasefire so more humanitarian aid can get into Gaza and to prevent Netanyahu’s annexation plans for the rest of the West Bank.
Earlier this week, France joined the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and 21 other allies of Israel in condemning restrictions on aid shipments into Gaza, as well as the killings of hundreds of Palestinians trying to reach food. The joint statement, the most significant yet from Western countries, said the war “must end now”.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is now an acute famine in addition to the daily massacres at the few aid distribution points, so pressure is building on the international community to take tougher actions to demand and enforce an immediate ceasefire.
The UK government has also said that Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to coordinate with allies France and Germany in an urgent phone call regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip on Friday. Starmer said that a ceasefire in Gaza will “put us on a path to the recognition of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution, which guarantees peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis”.

Update: Israel’s prime minister released a statement on Twitter. Netanyahu is not happy at all with France and he thinks the two-state solution guarantees the opposite of peace and security to say the least.
